1800s there was a rock overhang— or a cave-like structure— that allowed people to walk beneath Bridal Veil Falls. The ceiling partly collapsed in the early 1900s but the name stuck. Still, it’s quite an adventure to walk under the thundering falls. Again, bring rain gear and shoes that can handle getting wet. Visitors to the cave also are invited to take in a new multi-media exhibit, “The World Changed Here Pavilion,” that tells the dramatic story behind the park’s development. To reach the cave, take the trolley to the Goat Island stop. At this writing, admission is $21 for adults, $17 for children 6-12 and free for kids under 5.

Observation Tower where you’ll be handed a souvenir rain poncho as you board the double decker tour boat. This is a very wet ride so you’ll definitely want to wear the poncho or bring your own rain gear. From there, the boat ferries past the base of American Falls and onto the basin of Horseshoe Falls a dramatic passage leading through roiling whitewater and, of course, the signature mist that surrounds the falls. At this writing, adult tickets are $28.25 and $17.75 for youngsters 6-12. Kids age 5 and under ride for free.

There are dozens of hiking trails surrounding the falls on both the U.S. and Canadian sides. We recommend the Great Gorge Scenic Overlook Trail on the U.S. side— and, if you’re inclined to make this an international experience—the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve Trail in neighboring Ontario. Begin your Great Gorge hike with a stop at the Niagara Gorge Trailhead Center. You can sign up for a guided tour or explore the trail on your own. The one-mile beginner- level hike starts at the historic Schoellkopf Power Plant ruins and offers a number of gorgeous vistas.
