I HAVE A NEW BEST FRIEND! The Story of How I Adopted Enzo
As mentioned in a previous newsletter, Alison and I adopted a new furry friend! We’ve had him for a few months now, and in honor of October being Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, I wanted to share the experiences I’ve had with Enzo, our loveable and energetic 2-year-old thus far. At first, Alison and I had our eyes on another dog named Pete. He reminded me of my dog Bingo, whom I loved so much. I immediately wanted him because one of my best friends, who passed away from brain cancer a few years ago, was named Pete. But things didn’t go as planned. When we got approved to adopt him, his foster parents decided to keep him. I was bummed at first, but I knew my next furry companion was out there somewhere. I remembered that back in January, my best friend Pete spoke to me one day and told me from heaven that I would be getting my next dog soon. So, I continued to have faith.

friend. When we met the foster lady, she gave us a disclaimer about Phineas — he was just a ball of energy who hadn’t had the proper exercise. As soon as we saw him, he had the zoomies and was jumping all around. Although he had no manners, he was sweet and eager to please. He immediately wanted belly rubs from me! Shortly after that, we took him home! As soon as we got home, Phineas ran around and went crazy! We had to put Apple Air Tags on his collar just in case he ran off. And
And then, one day, that promise was fulfilled.
I was looking at dogs at Hound in Pounds, a nonprofit dog rescue organization, and I came across a beautiful fluffy, black-haired dog named Phineas. And I immediately fell in love. After going through the application process, Alison and I took our dog Sadie to New Jersey to meet Phineas and see how he would be with us and our other four-legged

AMIDST THE CHAOS AND FLAMES How One Family Saved Tons of Animals From Wildfires
Once Jason and his family reached Behchoko, people started to hear someone was on the way to rescue as many cats and dogs as possible. Jason told National News, “We had people coming up to us asking us to get the dogs and if we had room. We filled every kennel we had.” Once the truck was full of pets, the group took them to a safe location thanks to Vets Without Borders Canada in Yellowknife. The organization helped find temporary homes for the animals to be cared for as their owners evacuated.
This past May, information about the sudden wildfires in Canada took social media and news outlets by storm. No matter what news channel or media outlet you turned to, the forest fires were the top story with live coverage. Natural disasters like this are heartbreaking. Families have to leave their homes without any time to prepare. Many people evacuated their property without bringing any belongings with them. Unfortunately, some families had to leave their loveable pets behind. As multiple towns in Canada began receiving evacuation orders, one man stayed behind. Instead of driving away from the fires, he drove toward them with one purpose in mind — to save as many animals as possible. Jason Card, along with his teenage child and 80-year-old stepfather, drove from their hometown of Yellowknife to Behchoko, which was in the direct path of the wildfires. During their 63-mile journey, the group packed as many dog crates as they could in their truck and were on the lookout for any stray animals that needed saving.
But their good deeds didn’t stop there.
The courageous trio returned to the wildfires to locate and rescue even more pets from the natural disaster. They took multiple trips to Behchoko and didn’t return to Yellowknife until 5 a.m. the following morning. After a few hours of rest, Jason and his family hit the road again and rescued 30 more dogs from the wildfires. Brave and compassionate are the two words used to describe Jason and his family. They risked their lives so they could rescue the lives of dozens of cats and dogs. Thank you for your courageous act of kindness. This good deed will never be forgotten.

rucking with me! Enzo and I will take several hikes and runs each day. It allows us both to get our daily dose of exercise and vitamin D. He’s the best companion ever, and I’m so happy we took him home. Thank you, Pete, for this heavenly gift! I can’t wait to see what Enzo and I get into in the future. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on our shenanigans! Have you adopted a furry friend from a shelter? I would love to hear about your experience!
it’s a good thing we did because Alison called me one day and told me he had disappeared! With the help of the Air Tags, we were able to track him down and chase him until we got him home. Phineas is so fast! It’s like he runs at lightning speed. So, we decided to change his name to Enzo. We did this for two reasons. One, Phineas Finney was too much like a tongue twister. And two, “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein was narrated from the perspective of Enzo, the loveable canine of a racecar driver. Because our pup was super fast, we thought the name Enzo was the perfect fit! Remember how I said Enzo is just a ball of energy? Well, now his energy is being put to good use — I take him

Your mood can impact your day more than you may realize. For example, if you slept through your alarm, spilled coffee on your favorite shirt and were late for work due to heavy traffic, these instances can affect how the rest of your day plays out. But did you know the foods you eat can also impact how you feel? Molecular Psychiatry conducted a study in 2018 that found a healthy, balanced diet can help with depression. Additionally, The World Journal of Psychology mentioned that certain nutrients found in foods can act as antidepressants. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT HOW FOOD IMPACTS YOUR MOOD

So, if there is a tie between your mental health and what you eat, what foods can help improve your mood?
It starts with a balanced breakfast. There’s a reason breakfast is the most important meal of the day! You may have experienced being irritable or grumpy when you don’t eat in the mornings, which can affect your day. To ensure you eat a balanced breakfast to kickstart your day, consider consuming healthy carbohydrates such as green smoothies, fruits and legumes. If you want to eat whole grains in the morning, try whole grain muffins or cereals, granola bars, sprouted bread and oatmeal. If you love eating protein, then lean meat, eggs or nuts will hit the right spots! Another food group you want to pay extra attention to includes dark leafy greens and vegetables. They provide you with various nutrients like calcium, iron, potassium, fiber and antioxidants, which can promote better moods and decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety. Try adding spinach, kale, collard greens and green veggies to your favorite meals! Now, we’re not saying to avoid foods that can hinder your mood — it’s all about moderation! Sometimes, your sweet tooth cravings must be fulfilled. So, it’s okay to eat chocolate, drink sugary drinks and enjoy a piece of candy from time to time. It’s all about finding the right balance that provides your body with what it needs physically and mentally. Luckily, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone! Every month, we create meals that are delicious and beneficial to your mind and body. So, try one of our dishes today — your taste buds will thank you later.

Lucca, the Explosive-Sniffing Dog

THE INCREDIBLE STORY OF LUCCA, THE EXPLOSIVE-DETECTING DOG WHO SAVED LIVES
Sometimes, dogs are more than just a man’s best friend — they are heroes. When the Israel Defense Forces brought Chris Willingham, a Marine specializing in training military dogs, a small German shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix puppy in 2006, he knew she was special. Willingham named her Lucca, and in 2008, the pair deployed for their first tour in Iraq, where they spent countless hours together searching for improvised explosive devices or IEDs. When Lucca smelled a bomb, she’d lie down and wait for Willingham, an action they repeated so many times that the pair seemed to read each other’s minds. In fact, the duo became so successful that when platoons suspected they were heading into especially dangerous territory, they requested the team by name.
After returning from their second tour in Iraq, Willingham received orders that the Marines were restationing him at the Marine Security Guard School. But before he had to leave, he was allowed to choose a new handler for Lucca. Willingham chose Corporal Juan Rodriguez, whom he sensed was the perfect match for Lucca. And he was right. Lucca and Rodriguez picked up where she and Willingham left off until one day in 2012. The pair were four hours into their patrol in southern Afghanistan when Lucca located her second IED of the day. However, when she moved closer to the device to lie down — it exploded. Rodriguez quickly ran to Lucca, where he discovered she had lost one of her front paws in the explosion. He applied first aid,
a tourniquet, and called for a medevac, never leaving her side. She had suffered burns to her neck and torso, and doctors had to amputate her front left leg. However, in less than a month, Lucca was back to running around with the same spirit as before her injury but was now retired from her day job. She was reunited with Willingham and lived the rest of her days with him and his family peacefully until her passing in 2018. Lucca led more than 400 patrols during three combat tours in her career. She found 40 confirmed insurgents and countless explosives, and she never had a single human casualty during her six years of service.
