AMIDST THE CHAOS AND FLAMES How One Family Saved Tons of Animals From Wildfires
Once Jason and his family reached Behchoko, people started to hear someone was on the way to rescue as many cats and dogs as possible. Jason told National News, “We had people coming up to us asking us to get the dogs and if we had room. We filled every kennel we had.” Once the truck was full of pets, the group took them to a safe location thanks to Vets Without Borders Canada in Yellowknife. The organization helped find temporary homes for the animals to be cared for as their owners evacuated.
This past May, information about the sudden wildfires in Canada took social media and news outlets by storm. No matter what news channel or media outlet you turned to, the forest fires were the top story with live coverage. Natural disasters like this are heartbreaking. Families have to leave their homes without any time to prepare. Many people evacuated their property without bringing any belongings with them. Unfortunately, some families had to leave their loveable pets behind. As multiple towns in Canada began receiving evacuation orders, one man stayed behind. Instead of driving away from the fires, he drove toward them with one purpose in mind — to save as many animals as possible. Jason Card, along with his teenage child and 80-year-old stepfather, drove from their hometown of Yellowknife to Behchoko, which was in the direct path of the wildfires. During their 63-mile journey, the group packed as many dog crates as they could in their truck and were on the lookout for any stray animals that needed saving.
But their good deeds didn’t stop there.
The courageous trio returned to the wildfires to locate and rescue even more pets from the natural disaster. They took multiple trips to Behchoko and didn’t return to Yellowknife until 5 a.m. the following morning. After a few hours of rest, Jason and his family hit the road again and rescued 30 more dogs from the wildfires. Brave and compassionate are the two words used to describe Jason and his family. They risked their lives so they could rescue the lives of dozens of cats and dogs. Thank you for your courageous act of kindness. This good deed will never be forgotten.

rucking with me! Enzo and I will take several hikes and runs each day. It allows us both to get our daily dose of exercise and vitamin D. He’s the best companion ever, and I’m so happy we took him home. Thank you, Pete, for this heavenly gift! I can’t wait to see what Enzo and I get into in the future. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on our shenanigans! Have you adopted a furry friend from a shelter? I would love to hear about your experience!
it’s a good thing we did because Alison called me one day and told me he had disappeared! With the help of the Air Tags, we were able to track him down and chase him until we got him home. Phineas is so fast! It’s like he runs at lightning speed. So, we decided to change his name to Enzo. We did this for two reasons. One, Phineas Finney was too much like a tongue twister. And two, “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein was narrated from the perspective of Enzo, the loveable canine of a racecar driver. Because our pup was super fast, we thought the name Enzo was the perfect fit! Remember how I said Enzo is just a ball of energy? Well, now his energy is being put to good use — I take him
