My flesh and my h ea rt faileth bu t God is th e streng th of my heart, and my portion forever.” Young, the poet, wrote: “A death-bed’s a de tector of th e hleart.” W hat does skepti cism do for a man ju st leaping from th è bridge of life into the dark, deep w aters of death! Sometimes an infidel dies w ith a stolid, stupid indifference, w ith as little apparent feeling as a stone

would fall into a stream . But I chal lenge you to show me one infidel’s death-bed th a t has been surrounded w ith th e halo of glory th a t is. like the rainbow round the .dying disciple! That cannot be anything else bu t divine tru th and fact, th a t takes the sting from even death ir.self, and plants, not th e weeping willow, bu t the palm of victory in th e very ashes of the grave! :

É k É ê Baptism with tke Spirit and Fire Address before So. Calif. Premillennial Ass’n. by Dr. J. J. Sims

APTISM, as connected w ith the Holy Spirit, is only mentioned on th ree occasions in the New Testament. F irst, by John the

will come “w ith a shout, th e voice of th e archangel and th e trum p of God,” and so th e heavenly wheat will be gath ered into th e garner. Following th is age of the “ baptism w ith the Holy Spirit” will be th e “ bap tism w ith fire,” “The Great T ribula tio n ” age. Chaff speaks of th e wicked, th e ungodly of Psalm 1, and the “ ta re s” . . . th e “Children of the Wicked One” of Matt. 13. F ire -is in variably a symbol of Judgm en t in God’s Word, whether it be the Lord’s “Judg m ent of W orks” in Rev. 2 and 3, where “His eyes are as a flame of fire,” and also in 1 Cor. 3 where the “ fire shall try every m an’s work of what so rt it is; or in the eternal judgm ent of the unsaved, which is said to be “ eternal fire,” "The Lake of F ire,” and “Ge henna F ire .” Ju s t as the present age of the “Bap tism w ith the Holy Spirit” closes w ith th e Lord’s Coming into th e air, and tak ing up His people, so the “ baptism w ith fire” age will close “when the Lord Jesu s shall be revealed from heaven w ith His m ighty angels in flam ing fire tak ing vengeance on them which know not God, and th a t obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thess. 1). This will be fol-

This is very strik ing in view of the way th e word is being- used today; as in all cases it is distinctly lim ited in the Scripture to th e coming of th e Holy Spirit on th e day of Pentecost. The testim ony of John th e B aptist to our Lord was in Matthew and Luke, “He shall baptise you w ith the Holy Spirit and w ith fire.” In Mark, also in the Lord’s prom ise in Acts I, and in P e te r’s account, th e phrase “w ith fire” is om itted. “Baptism w ith the Holy Spirit, and w ith fire” is a two-fold bap tism w ith a two-fold resu lt.” “He shall baptise you w ith th e Holy Spirit.” “He shall gath er the wheat into His g arn er.” “He shall baptise you w ith fire” ; He shall bu rn up the chaff w ith unquench able fire." This dispensation, commencing w ith th e coming of th e Holy Spirit, is the age of “g ath ering th e w heat,” ( “Taking out of th e Gentiles a people for His Name” ) and will close a t th e “ time of h arv est” '(M att. 13) when th e Lord
