WHAT’S YOUR VERDICT? When Dr. Nott, th e famous president of Union College, Schenectady, N. Y., was pastor in Albany, he announced a sériés of sermons on the resu rrection of Christ, which he preached on six suc cessive Sundays. To his g rea t surprise and gratification he noticed a t every sermon the presence of a man, then one of the most conspicuous a t the Capitol, Brockholst Livingston, em inent as a ju rist, and confessedly a t th e head of th e legal profession in the Empire State. The preacher quietly pursued his purpose, adduced proofs, answered objections, analyzed the chief p riest’s lying story, measured th e evidence for honesty in the disciples, treating the entire n arrativ e in th e Gospels as if it were a case in in tricate ju risp ru dence; and then he drew the conclu sion and, tru e to his calling, sought to urge it in stan tly w ith all th e power he possessed, upon his hearers, th a t the Christian religion was grounded in tru th and had unalterable claims for

acceptance upon every thinking man, and th a t if-h e neglected it he stood in jeopardy every hour. At the close of the series Mr. Livings ton lingered in -th e aisle to speSk w ith th e m inister. He gracefully expressed his gratification at! so lum inous a tre a t m ent of the subject, and said in sub stance: “ I am a lawyer and accustomed to such discussions, and I adm it you have made out your case incontrovert- ibly; bu t,” added the ju rist, "th is case demands a verdict. It cannot b e left so. I t is not merely an intellectual conflict you have been waging: it car ries a world of life in its train ; for if Jesus of Nazareth rose from the dead in Judea, then the religion he came to establish is tru e, and every man’s duty is plain to accept its precepts and order his conduct by them .”
