suffers loss— him self saved, “yet so as by fire.” If all the time, streng th , and money expended in aid of reform simply as such, were presented to God to be used in th e spread of His gospel, we should see how much has been wasted (and we remember “ th e tim e is sh o rt” ). How much easier to bring a man directly to Christ to recieve salvation, and be sure th a t in doing so he shall also add to his faith, temperance and everything he needs beside, th an to persuade him to be tem perate simply, thus m aking it necessary for God to send ano ther mes senger to convert him. As soon m ight we, did we know of a magic fountain of healing, perform long tiresome jour neys from it to th e thoroughly diseased w ithin and w ithout, each tim e taking bu t a .thimble full to be applied to a small portion of th e body, instead of leading them to th e fountain for im m e d ia te and thorough cleansing. PUNY MAN God must be a cause possessed of power far beyond our utmost thought. "Weigh th e earth on which we dwell,” says an astronom er, “ count th e millions of its inh ab itan ts th a t have come and gone for the last six thousand years, un ite th e ir streng th into one arm , and test its power in an effort to move the earth. It could no t stir it a single foot in a thousand years; and yet, under the omnipotent hand of God, not a m inute passes th a t it does not fly far more than a thousand m iles.’’ A strong man can throw an iron ball a little distance, and then it stops. By th e aid of a cannon he can throw it sev eral miles, bu t even then it stops, but in the morning of creation God hurled this immense globe from His creative hand and it is moving yet. No wonder the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy.

REFORMATION-

REGENERATION

BY MRS. E. A. WILSON

|N these days of boasted prog ress, when we hear so much about reform , it' is well to know w hether we are lending

our aid to measures set on foot by God, or “spending our streng th for naugh t.” Many have ventured to take th e work for th e temperance cause out of the realm to which it belongs, the hum an itarian , and lift it into the sp iritu al; now, “Whatsoever is no t of faith is sin .” God uses no faith but th a t ex ercised in His own way, viz.: a faith which, recognizing our en tire ru in and helplessness, subm its entirely and only to His Son, both in His work of re demption and ail His other works for us: If He is our Savior, He is also our Header, and can never lead us except “ into all tru th ” by His Holy Spirit: it therefore follows th a t the effort to cause men to bring fo rth any of th e fru its of righteousness independently of Him who alone produces them , is to dishonor Him who says, “F rom me is thy fru it found.” W ithout me ye can do nothing. The 'energy of th e flesh is not “ the peace of God;” it is building “wood, hay, stubb le” ; of all thu s laboring it is tru e th a t “ th eir vine is as th e vine of Sodom,” instead of clusters from, the tru e vine, the “ goodly vine” which the Lord h ath planted. Thus Lot, while occupying a wrong place could only ex ho rt men to mend th e ir manners, but went no higher until, th e great danger of his position forced upon him, he (urged by the messengers) besought his fellows to escape, which was th e tru e message, but delivered by him all too late— he had stood upon a low plane— his testimony is unheeded, and so he
