T HE K I N G ’S B U S I N E S S Is Abraham ; he lived in a country where the people worshipped idols. One day God spoke to Abraham and told him to leave his home, friends and rela tions, and go to ano ther land which He would show him. God spoke to people in those days, for th ere was no Bible to tell them what He wanted them to do. Many men and women today leave th e ir homes and loved ones and go far away to tell others about Jesus. Abra ham did not know what land it was, yet he left his frien'ds and his home as he was commanded to do. F o r he had faith ; he believed th a t God would bring him to the land he had told him of. Abraham took his wife Sarah, and his nephew Lot and his servants w ith him, and started on the long journey. He had to cross over wide rivers and a desert, where th e country was lonely and wild. But Abraham tru sted in God who had told him to go,' and God took care of him and those who w ere w ith him through all the long journey. It was a hard trip, for they did not have auto mobiles or train s in those days, but rode on the backs of camels or walked, so th a t they were many weeks and months making th e journey. (In using sand table, it is suggested th a t most probable route was crossing E uph ra tes by th e ford a t Carchemash, 60 miles west of H aran, then south past H aran and Damascus, and would likely enter Canaan from the north on west side of w aters of Merom, or strik ing down into Jo rd an valley, travel along on east side, crossing a t ford 25 miles north of Dead Sea, (then no rth west to Shechem.) When God called Abraham he promised
389 to bless him, ami make of him a great nation, and th a t th rough Abraham all th e fam ilies of the- ea rth would be blest. Explain to th e children how fully the prom ise has been fulfilled in th e Hebrew people, and the blessing through Christ, who was of the line of Abraham . F inally afte r a long, long journey they came to a place called Shechem in the land of Canaan. Now I th ink th e y ' would be thinking of the old home they had left and the many friend® there, for th is land was all so strange and th e people were heathen people. Now what do you th ink hap pened? The new land was a beautiful land very much like th e country of Southern California. But best of all the Lord appeared unto Abraham , and told him He would give th is land unto his (Abraham ’s) people th a t should live after him. Abraham bu ilt an a lta r unto the Lord here. Abraham called upon th e name of th e Lord. . Of course it was hard for Abraham to leave his home and go away into a strange place, but he loved God, and he did not ask any questions, but obeyed. God won derfully blest Abraham , by giving him a son and many flocks and servants, bu t he went about from place to place living always in a ten t. Abraham never owned a home in Canaan, bu t by faith he lived in a city whose m aker and builder is God. When we come to Jesus w hat are some of th e things we leave behind (Teacher aid in suggesting some of th e bad habits we leave, and the many good things Jesus gives us as •blessings.) Closing P rayer.
