There are th ree g reat periods in the life of Moses, of forty years each. (1) In Egypt (A student, period of probation). (2) In th e W ilderness (A) shepherd, learn ing th e m ind of God). (3 ) A Leader (Saviour, prov­ ing God). Moses’ impetuous n atu re is mani­ fested when, having reached m aturity, he noted the oppression of his own peo­ ple by th e Egyptians, and sought to avenge them (Acts 7:24, 25). “A n d seein g : o n e o f th e m s u ffe r w ro n g :, d e d e fe n d e d h im , a n d a v e n g e d h im t h a t w a s o p p re s s e d a n d s m o te th e E g y p tia n . His m istake was over­ ruled for God’s glory. In th e miost na­ tu ra l fashion God provided for th e prep­ aration of th e man who was to be­ come more th an a prince of Egypt— a prince among men. (2) THE SHEPHERD SCHOOLING. A fter Moses’ experience w ith the Egyptian he perhaps vowed he would never in terfere again, bu t he cannot refrain from driving away th e boors who were annoying th e daughters of the priest of Midian. As a resu lt of th is he made his home w ith Je th ro and tended his flocks. Moses’ school was in the wilderness. In solitude, self­ m easurem ent, meditation, he gained a knowledge of the land and of w ilder­ ness life.
