A P R I L 8 , 1 9 2 3 THE BLIND SINNER—John 9:1-17

Golden Text: “As long as I am in th e world, I am the light of the world” (John 9 :5 ). Outline: (1) The Blind Man, v. 1. (2) The Blind Disciples, vs. 2-3. (3) The Bestowment of L ight, vs. 4-17. (1). THE BLIND MAN, v. 1. In th e Gospel of John Jesus is m ani fested as L ight, Life and Love; L ight (8 :1 2 ). “T h e n s p a k e J e s u s u n to th e m , s a y in g , I a m th e l i g h t o f th e w o rld ; h e t h a t fo l- lo w e th m e s h a ll n o t w a lk in d a rk n e s s , b u t s h a ll h a v e th e lig h t o f lif e .” Iyiie (1 :4 ) “ I n h im w a s lif e ; a n d t h e lif e w a s th e l i g h t o f m e n .” Love (13 :34 ) “A n e w c o m m a n d m e n t I g iv e u n to y o u , T h a t y e Ip v e o n e a n o th e r ; a s I h a v e lo v e d y o u , t h a t y e a ls o lo v e o n e a n o th e r .” In th e E igh th Chapter we have the m anifestation of Jesus in w hat He is tow ard men, and in the N inth Chapter we have the m anifestation of what He does to men. There áre four cases recorded of healing th e blind in the Gospels. In Matt. 9:27-35 we have th e account of th e two blind men, seeking, inquiring and ask ing for mercy. They were evidently connected w ith th e synagogue. To th e ir inquiry Jesus replied, “ Believe ye th a t I am able to do th is?” They believed in His w illingness to heal them bu t not in H is ability. He puts them to th e test, “According to your faith be it unto you” and th e ir eyes were opened.

In Mark 8:22-26' is an account, of friends who brought one who was blind and requested Jesus to give him sight. We do not know what the condition of th is man was, bu t th ere is an im portant lesson h ere for Christians. There are blind Christians, blind teachers, blind preachers and blind personal workers. T hat is, th e ir eyes have never been opened to the tru th . We must let the ligh t in: .(2 Cor. 4:5, 6 ) “F o r w e p r e a c h n o t o u rs e lv e s , b u t C h ris t J e s u s th e L o r d ; a n d o u rs e lv e s y o u r s e r v a n ts f o r J e s u s ’ s a k e . “F o r G od w h o c o m m a n d e d th e li g h t to s h in e o u t o f d a r k n e s s , h a th s h in e d in o u r h e a r ts , to g iv e th e li g h t o f th e k n o w le d g e o f th e g lo r y o f G o d in th e fa c e o f J e s u s C h ris t.” (Eph. 5:14) “W h e r e f o re h e s a ith , A w a k e th o u t h a t s le e p e s t, a n d a r is e f r o m th e d e a d , a n d C h ris t s h a ll g iv e th e e lig h t.” Jesus took th e man by th e hand and led him out of the town, away from his friends, and th ere is a suggestion here for personal workers, and th a t is, we should always avoid dealing w ith a soul in th e hearing of others, if possible. Deal w ith them alone. The th ird instance of Jesus giving sight to the blind is in Mark 10:45-52 where Bartimaeus, the beggar, whose whole life had been spent in wretched blindness, recognized Jesus as th e Son of David and cried for mercy. He was impelled to make th is earnest cry by th e fact th a t Jesu s was passing by. The Lord sent the disciples to bring him. He pu t him to the te st of obedience.
