T H È K l t i G ' S B U S I N È S S Son of God m ight he glorified thereby (Ch. 9 :3 ). The great glory th a t God shall get out of th is seeming calam ity is not merely the recovery of Lazarus, but the unanswerable proof for all ages th a t Jesus is God manifest in tlie flesh, and is Lord of all— the dead as well as of th e living. When His disciples would prevent His retu rn to Judea, Jesus unfolds the g reat tru th th a t neither incidents nor circum stances must impede when duty calls for action (vs. 9, 10). “Lazarus is dead” and who, in the presence of death, has competency? None bu t God. Hence souls in th e Con dition of sp iritual death (Eph. 2 :1 ) need th e direct, personal and m iraculous intervention of the Lord Jesus, if the dead are to be restored. Having done all, send for Jesus. Nought else can avail in the presence of death. The law cannot give life. Cere monies are useless. Human interven tion is out of court when death reigns. Thus, while all is sadness, darkness and death— sisters of Bethany, sorrowing saints of all ages, poor souls dead in sin, the Lord of life and the King of glory is on th e way (v. 11 ; John 1 4 :3 )! W hat were th e names of his sisters ?_ Did Jesus love them? Does Jesus love every body? How do you know He does? W hat did He do to show th a t He loves everybody? Does everybody love Jesus? Do you love Him? Now we are going to have a story which will tell us how some people Showed th eir love for Jesus. We are go ing into a home, and who do you sup pose we will find in th a t home? Who

can guess? Well, it was a home where Jesus used to go to re st Himself. He made all the stars and He made the world, but He did not have any home now, except those homes where the peo ple invited Him to eat w ith them. Well, the Mary and M artha we told about last week invited Him to supper and He came. Their brother who was raised from the dead was there. Jesus and Lazarus were a t the table. (Teacher- You can tell how they gathered a t table, if you Wish; on couches leaning w ith th eir heads close to th e table. This will make it easy to explain how Mary could anoint His feet.) M artha 'b rough t the food in and waited on the table, and Mary went to h er room and got a box of ointm ent (perfum e) th a t cost a lot of money. Then she went in and kneeled down at the couch and poured all the perfume on Jesu s’ feet, and let her hair down and wiped His feet w ith her hair. The perfume filled the whole room, and oh! how sweet it was,*- She did this because she loved Jesus and wanted to show Him how much she loved Him. She thought th a t she ought to be willing to do anything for Jesus, because He loved everybody and He had made her brother alive. One of th e men who came w ith Jesus didn’t like it because she poured the perfume on Jesu s’ feet. He said the perfume ought to have been sold and th e money tu rned over to him so he could give it to the poor. He didn’t want it» fo r the poor. He wanted to keep it himself, and he was a bad, self ish man. Jesus said to him, “ Let her alone. She knows what she is doing. She knows I am going to die and she w ants to do this while she can.” Mary was right. It was ju st the right- thing to do. I know a little ,g irl and she saves her pennies, and instead of buying candy or pop corn, she buys Gospels and gives them away. That little girl knows what
