MARY LEE (UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX) LCN AWARD WINNER 2017 LAW LECTURER OF THE YEAR

T his year’s recipient of Law Lecturer of the Year award, Mary Lee of the University of Sussex, has devoted over a decade to helping students find their way on the sometimes rocky path to a legal career. Mary was a mature law student herself; following her undergraduate and master’s degree at Sussex Law School, she was delighted to be offered the chance to undertake seminar teaching as an associate tutor:

“I had done some student mentoring during my studies and the teaching felt like a natural progression. I found it immensely enjoyable and rewarding, and was appointed as a teaching fellow in 2004.” She is now a senior teaching fellow and feels “very fortunate in being able to pursue a teaching-only career”. Mary’s expertise spans a range of first and second-year core subjects, including the English legal system,

contract, tort, and equity and trusts. The best bit, she says, is “getting to be part of the students’ intellectual journey. It is wonderfully rewarding to see students grow into confident independent learners – to see them develop their own interests, opinions and passions for different areas of law.” She has a salutary message concerning grades in your first year (and reiterating what almost every recruiter has ever said to us): “Don’t
