W e want you to be the best possible candidate. To achieve that, you have to expand your knowledge beyond the technical law you have learned at university to consider the broader commercial world in which you will be working as a young professional. As such, you need to stay abreast of what’s going on. In this section, we start with our scorching “Commercial questions” – four articles that highlight some of the commercially interesting topics and issues that lawyers grapple with every day. Next, there’s “A year in the law”, offering a digested read of the most important legal trends and developments over the past year. But don’t rest on your laurels; this is merely a jumping-off point, designed to inspire you to read further. The same goes for “The commercial year”: this is a summary of some of the bigger business stories that intersect with the legal world and which all good lawyers (and students) should know about. All these elements are designed to get your brain thinking about the law in a commercial and client- oriented way. We leave you with a few tips to help you to go the extra mile: • Read the Financial Times (FT) and the business pages of the broadsheets and the Sunday papers to gain an understanding of what is happening in the

business world – it might even be worth paying for an online subscription to something like the FT while you’re studying and applying. • Look at the websites of firms and their clients. In particular, read their recent press releases, which will give you a sense of the current issues on which the company or firm is commenting publicly. • Read the legal press – The Lawyer , Legal Business , Legal Week – to find out which firms are working on what deals. Twitter and LinkedIn the legal press and broadsheets’ business pages, as well as the firms that interest you. • Talk to your family and friends to gain an understanding of what they and the organisations they work for do. Networking is one of the most effective ways of building up your knowledge. • Get involved in university activities that relate to business, such as becoming treasurer of a society or taking part in business games. • Use social media to your advantage, by following on
