Masters of BGM Bituminous Geomembrane (BGM) is not a conventional geomembrane and requires specialized installation techniques for efficient execution. Titan crews have mastered the art of BGM liner installation, executing projects with speed, quality, and professionalism on numerous mine pond and mine dam raise- lining initiatives. This year we completed a large dam raise lining project at a Northern Ontario mine site adding to our experience. Here, we installed 1,584,297 SF (147,186 m2) of Coletanche ES3 BGM. To date, Titan has installed an impressive total of 8,124,148 SF (754,758 m2) of BGM material, all while adhering to stringent quality control and safety audits. To put it into context, this installation volume equates to roughly 140 NFL football fields! Our field crews are legitimately masters of BGM installation.

Keeping it 'On Track'
With established fabrication facilities in Canada and in the USA, Titan uses the latest technology to custom fabricate pre-seamed geomembrane panels for a variety of lining projects. This summer we worked on a large project for an excess soil stockpile pad at a CN Rail site in Ashcroft, British Columbia. This project involved pre-fabricating and installing 150,694 SF (14,000 m2) 40mil LLDPE geomembrane panels to cover contaminated soil that was being transported from this rail site to a stockpile pad. Our team successfully delivered and kept the project well 'on track'.
R.I.P Rip Rap!
This closure dam project in Alberta was originally specified with 700mm of rip rap rock and geotextile for slope erosion control. After consulting with the client, Titan proposed a longer-lasting and more cost- effective erosion control solution which included lining the dam slopes with Pyramat®, a high-performance turf reinforcement mat (HPTRM) made of woven polypropylene geotextile. To date, we've supplied and installed an impressive 484,376 SF (45,000 m2) of material.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Concrete Canvas® for the Win at Hydro Site!
A fuel tank farm at a hydroelectric site in Iowa needed to line berms surrounding 9 fuel storage tanks. The objective was to provide erosion protection of the berm slopes. This had to be done quickly and with a lining solution that not only offered erosion protection but also fire-protection capabilities for safety reasons and weed suppression to eliminate maintenance needs. Concrete Canvas® (CC5) was chosen for this project, meeting all the criteria, and offering a long-term, safe, and cost-effective solution. Titan supplied and installed a total of 68,864 SF (6,397 m2) of CC for this project which was successfully completed in just 3 weeks.
Mega Mining Project
With extensive experience and expertise executing lining projects in the mining sector, we were thrilled to have been awarded a project to supply and install over 1,360,000 SF (12,6348 m2) of LLDPE geomembrane at a major mine site in Ontario this year. The project spanned over a 5-month period and involved lining underneath a tailings pipeline as well as multiple tailings management dams and the tailings management facility (TMF).

Pre"fab-ulous" Underground Liner
An underground stormwater detention system was being installed as part of site development for a large warehouse in Richmond, British Columbia. The design required two large stormwater systems over 13,993 SF (1,300 m2) each, with one on the east side and another on the west side of the building. This detention system would help manage stormwater runoff volumes to avoid flooding, and reduce peak flows discharging from the site during a rainstorm event. The dugout containing the chambers for this detention system needed to be lined with geomembrane for environmental and performance reasons. Titan was called on to complete this portion of the project. The engineers designed the system to utilize a 30mil geomembrane LLDPE to prevent landfill leachates from getting into the stormwater being detained within. For construction we proposed using prefabricated geomembrane panels for for efficiency reasons, which we custom fabricate in-house to the required size requirements. In total, Titan fabricated, supplied, and installed 75,950 SF (7,056 m2) of 30mil LLDPE geomembrane and 32,291 SF (3000m2) of Swamp Grid™40 geogrid for soil stabilization, to successfully execute this project.
Pumping Station Action
This summer we supplied and installed 3mm concrete protective liner for a new 160 ft. (50m) underground sewage overflow tank at a pumping station in Southern Ontario. This underground overflow tank is designed to store enough sewage to last 48 hours in the event the sewer pumps stop working. The overflow tank was lined with concrete protection liner to help protect the environment from toxic sewage leakage and gas emissions should the concrete crack. Installation involved welding joints for pipe sections making up the tank. Titan was selected for this project due to our extensive experience and expertise with tunnel-lining projects. Our team completed the job in 6 days to ensure a safe site!

'Lagooning' Around
This summer we supplied and installed a wastewater lagoon lining system in Southeastern Manitoba. Our crew worked together to keep morale high through the prairie heat, to install 586,094 SF (54,450 m2) of 60mil HDPE for 4 cells. The original design had intermediate trenches between all four of the cells, but we worked with the contractor and were able to show our methodology of lining over the berms was more efficient, so it was approved. Working in hot conditions, our crew was able to achieve the necessary production values completing the job on schedule and on budget.
Rail Track Revamp
A G3 Grain Elevator site in Manitoba required further railbed stabilization and geocell was the perfect solution for this track rehabilitation project. The project consisted of removing the existing track and excavating down to the design elevation requirements so that the installation of geocell could take place on 4,790 ft. (1460 m) of rail track. The design included 2 layers of custom-size geocell panels which were secured together with cable locks and the cells were filled with sub-ballast rock. Layers of geotextile were used to help with further reinforcement and meet filtration requirements. This product, combined with the knowledge and experience provided by JKW Construction on this project, allowed for an easy and quick install so that the track servicing the grain elevator could be restored with minimal disruption.

RESEARCH & INNOVATION
With a strong commitment to innovation, 2022 saw continued partnerships between Titan and post-secondary academia on research and product development initiatives benefiting the engineering community. The following outlines our research projects and published technical papers developed in conjunction with our partners.
Concordia University, Montreal QC (3 years NSERC Alliance Grant)
Titan’s R&D team continued to work this year for the 3 years Alliance NSERC program for the ‘Geotextile Filtration to Improve Surface Water Quality' , with Concordia University Montreal, QC. Very encouraging results were obtained from both for Lake Caron and Lake Johanne studies. Emphasis was laid on the recycled use of custom-made geotextiles to contribute to the circular and sustainable economy. A new proposal titled ‘ Development of water-energy systems with Indigenous communities’ was submitted to the New Frontiers Exploration and NSERC Discovery Horizons. This interdisciplinary research project will contribute to and foster an integrated human-environment coupled approach for transforming the understanding and the management of the water-energy nexus with a focus on First Nations communities. This research will address LCA and climate change adaptation and water security etc. in high-risk areas. This would also create a new application business opportunity.
McGill University, Montreal QC (3 years NSERC Alliance Grant)
The NSERC 3 years alliance research funding program with McGill University's Geo Group, entitled "Improving the performance of ground- supported slabs subjected to extreme environmental conditions using rigid high strength fiberglass geogrids" , is progressing very well and encouraging results have been obtained so far. Sam Bhat, Titan’s CTO of Geosynthetics, “I’m excited to collaborate with McGill University’s Geo-Group on this groundbreaking study, which aims to provide an alternative environmentally friendly design option by utilizing Titan’s advanced ConForce Grid™ to reduce maintenance costs and extend the service life of concrete structures exposed to harsh environmental conditions and cold climates in Canada. This method is projected to result in long-term solutions with a significant reduction in carbon emissions”. Our Alliance Grants (ALLRP) R&D project entitled, "Improved and sustainable design of railway embankments in Canadian cold climate", is progressing very well with the Geo-Group of McGill University headed by Prof Mohamed Meguid. The results are expected to be very useful for designing railway embankments using geosynthetics in Canadian cold climates for supporting a new research project at McGill University aiming at studying the performance of reinforced railway track using Titan’s developed innovative geosynthetic products.
