A MONTH OF GRATITUDE

Thinking of My Staff and Family This Thanksgiving

All of us work hard to cultivate this spirit of caring and professionalism with weekly training and coordination meetings and “Alborzi University” every few months. During these times, we strive to optimize our care, address our patients’ changing needs, and integrate new technology into our practices. I think it’s a testament to the team that no one ever complains about these training sessions. Everyone is eager to learn new things and push themselves to deliver the best service in the industry. I just want to thank my staff from the bottom of my heart for constantly keeping an open mind and being ready to learn. It’s obvious to everyone involved that patient care is paramount to my team, putting care first in every aspect of their work. Not only that, but I’m thankful for the respect my staff gives to each other and their patients. We’re all on the same team, after all, so it’s vital that we recognize the accomplishments and efforts of our peers. Besides my wonderful staff, I’m thankful this Thanksgiving for my amazing patients who allow us to care for them and their friends and families. And last, but not least, I am grateful for my wonderful husband and son, who always support me in everything I do, not only as a

This month, with Thanksgiving right around the corner, I’d like to express my gratitude and appreciation for my incredible team at Alborzi Orthodontics. There’s just no way we could provide such exceptional patient care and maintain our fun and positive work environment without the dedicated efforts of each and every member of our stellar staff. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work alongside. My team isn’t just a collection of support staff, they’re integral to our exemplary patient treatment. From the moment a patient steps through our doors, they’re welcomed with warmth and enthusiasm from our front desk coordinators, who are second to none in the industry. Then, they’re seen by one of our talented dental assistants, who won’t miss a thing during the examination process. Meanwhile, our financial and marketing coordinators provide the scaffolding that enables our office to reach out and transform the lives of the greatest possible number

of people. And don’t forget my executive assistants, Diane Dugoni Descalso and Jennifer Kelley, without whom I can’t imaging getting anything done. It all comes down to everyone working toward our mission statement, to enhance the quality of life for our patients by providing a level of care that is unequaled in the practice of orthodontics, and to do so in a fun environment that is on the cutting edge of service, knowledge, and technology. When we’re hiring, we look for a special type of person. They must have an innate sense of caring and friendliness, and we especially seek those who have vibrant, engaging personalities. These are traits that a lot of people fake across many industries, but really, it’s obvious when someone puts on a fake smile and delivers you a hackneyed spiel. Our entire team is handpicked so that we have talented people who truly want to make a difference in our patients’ lives.

doctor, but as an individual striving to do my best for myself and the world. I simply wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

3 FAMILY ACTIVITIES FOR THANKSGIVING

Unless you have a child auditioning for “MasterChef Junior,” you’re probably not going to let the little ones cook the turkey this Thanksgiving. Just because the kitchen might be off-limits doesn’t mean you can’t find a few creative ways to make the holiday extra special for your kids. Spice up Thanksgiving with these fun, family-friendly activities. COLORING-BOOK TABLECLOTHS If you have a big family, you are probably familiar with the Thanksgiving tradition of the kids’ table. It may be smaller than the grown-ups’ seating arrangement, but it doesn’t have to be any less special. Turn your kids’ table into a canvas for a colorful, creative dining experience. To do this, use craft or art paper to cover the table. Tape everything down tightly and provide crayons

and colored pencils for every place setting. If you want to add some extra holiday spirit, put the drawing supplies in empty cranberry sauce and pumpkin cans. GRATITUDE MOBILES Of course, Thanksgiving isn’t just about delicious food. It’s also about reflecting on the parts of our lives we are grateful for. Teaching kids about gratitude is the most valuable Thanksgiving lesson. Bring that concept to life with a gratitude mobile. Grab some colored paper circles — or cut them out — and have your children write down things that they are thankful

Tie the other end of the string to a coat hanger or embroidery hoop and hang it from the ceiling. STUFF THE TURKEY GAME Want to get the kids outside so you can get to work in the kitchen? Create a Thanksgiving-themed game for them to play outside while you prep the stuffing and put the turkey in the oven. To create a holiday-themed “Stuff the Turkey” game, all you need is a few paper bags. We’ll bet you have some left over from shopping. Use two small bags stuffed with scrap paper to create legs and glue them to a larger bag folded to look like

for. A silver Sharpie is great for this. Punch holes in the tops

the body of a turkey. Now that you have your turkey, you need some balls to stuff it with. Anything soft and baseball-sized will work, even some balled-up paper. Kids will take turns trying to toss the balls into the turkey, scoring points for every shot made.

Thinking About Braces for Your Kids? WHEN SHOULD YOU START

Should a second-grader have braces?

As the first molars and incisors begin to emerge, an orthodontist can determine if there is enough space in your child’s mouth for all their teeth. They can also help prevent or correct crowding, which, aside from being aesthetically displeasing, can be painful and make proper cleaning difficult. Crowding can lead to a high risk of tooth decay and gum disease. This early stage is also the best time to break any bad habits. Thumb sucking or pacifier use can comfort children if they feel anxious, but as permanent teeth come in, these habits can lead to an open bite, when the top and bottom front teeth don’t touch. Your orthodontist is equipped with the right tools to help easily put an end to these bad habits. In addition to catching problems early and ending bad habits, an orthodontist can guide jawbone development. Underbites, crossbites, and impaired speech patterns can be caused by improper jaw development. These are easy to correct early on, but they can become expensive and time-consuming challenges

after your child’s jaw is fully developed around age 10.

Picture this: You’ve just placed a fresh turkey on the table, and your family gathers around to share Thanksgiving dinner. As little Jessica takes a big bite, you catch glimpse of shiny metal braces strapped to your niece’s teeth. Jessica only just started second grade, and you haven’t even begun to think about orthodontics for your own kids. Is your brother being overzealous about his daughter’s teeth? Or are you falling behind and failing your children’s oral health? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how you can best address issues with your children’s teeth. However, to start out on the right foot, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends parents have their children evaluated at age 7. Few children will need orthodontic treatment at this age, but it is around this time baby teeth have fallen out and the permanent teeth have begun to grow. Early evaluation is important, so your orthodontist can monitor your children’s development and guide their teeth in the right direction.

The biggest benefit of early evaluation is that it allows orthodontists to address anomalies the moment they arise. With the right steps,

they can help correct minor issues in your child’s mouth before they turn into expensive problems.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons ICONIC

Thanksgiving is a holiday full of traditions, from turkey and stuffing to football and naps. Since 1924, the Macy’s Parade has grown to become not only a Thanksgiving staple but also the world’s largest parade. Over 3.5 million people attended the parade last year, with another 20 million tuning in from home. The main attraction is always the massive character balloons, which first graced the skies in 1927. Over the decades, some of these balloons have become nearly as famous as the character they depict. FELIX THE CAT When the Felix the Cat balloon appeared in 1931, it set the standard for all characters to follow. Sadly, the original balloon got tangled in wires and caught on fire, so it has been lost to history. Felix’s influence on the parade is so immense, however, that when Macy’s brought him back in 2016 for the parade’s 90th anniversary, they recreated his original design. Without Felix’s debut, the parade might look a lot different today.

SNOOPY When it comes to balloon characters, none is more famous than the classic “Peanuts” beagle. His first balloon floated through the sky in 1968, and he’s been a regular fixture ever since. Charles Schultz’s famous pooch holds the record for most variations in a parade (eight) and most total appearances (40). Though Snoopy doesn’t come out every year, he usually closes the show when he does. PIKACHU The Pokémon mascot didn’t appear until 2001, but he’s become a star attraction, showing up every year since. Bright, expressive, and impossible to miss, Pikachu checks off all the boxes for a successful balloon character. For 16 years, those who predicted that Pokémon was just a fad have gotten a big, yellow reminder of just how wrong they were.
