What Every Osseointegration Patient Should Know About Follow-Up Care

At ForMotion, we are proud to be recognised as the world’s leading provider of prosthetic care for individuals with osseointegration. While surgery is an important milestone, long-term success with osseointegration relies on ongoing care, collaboration, and patient education. One of the most common questions we hear from patients is: “What happens after surgery and rehabilitation?” Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about maintaining your health, mobility, and confidence following osseointegration.

What Should I Be Monitoring at Home? You play a crucial role in maintaining your implant’s health. We encourage patients to regularly check their stoma site and overall comfort. Contact your clinical team if you notice: • Redness, swelling, or discharge around the stoma • Persistent or increasing pain • Changes in prosthetic fit or stability of components • Reduced tolerance to activity or weight-bearing • Any concerns following a fall or injury Early communication allows concerns to be addressed quickly and effectively.

Long-Term Care: Once stable, with all early goals achieved and returning to routine, it is recommended that patients attend routine reviews bi-annually or more frequently as required. Every patient is unique, and your follow-up care plan will always be tailored to your needs and lifestyle. "Long-term success with osseointegration is built on follow-up, rehabilitation, and strong collaboration between patient and clinician.”

How Often Will I Need Follow-Up Appointments? Your follow-up schedule will evolve as you progress through your osseointegration journey. Early Recovery: In the initial stages weekly appointments allow your clinical team to monitor healing and guide safe loading progression. Rehabilitation Phase: Regular reviews, such as fortnightly or monthly visits help refine your prosthetic setup and support functional improvements as patients progress in activity level and ability to use a prosthesis for longer periods of time.
