WWE Star Becomes a Champion for Sick Kids FROM WRESTLING RING TO REAL LIFE
THE KONECKY JOURNAL AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2025
A value instilled in many of us as kids is to never give up. You keep fighting, no matter the odds or obstacles.
Regardless of your opinion of pro wrestling, those acts of generosity add up to something remarkable. Cena could have done any number of things with his time, championship image, and fame, but he chose to give it freely to children with life- threatening illnesses. “I can’t say enough how cool it is to see the kids so happy, and their families so happy,” Cena says in a 2015 WWE video. When he receives a request, he adds, “I just drop everything. I don’t care what I’m doing.” I know firsthand how compelling a WWE star can be to a kid. As I have written in the past, I started watching pro wrestling at around age 7. I was fascinated by the larger-than-life characters. I knew the events were choreographed and staged, but I loved the colorful storylines anyway. The events are fun for everyone, even if you’re not a WWE fan. The wrestlers are experts at playing to a crowd. Hulk Hogan and other WWE stars have become household names. Interestingly, after being compared for decades to Hogan as the ultimate good guy, Cena in his final year has transformed his fighting image into a “heel,” or bad guy. Commentators praise the shift for adding depth to his character and creating new excitement among fans. It has also sparked a vigorous discussion over his motive. Did he really give up being a good guy? That is one for the reader’s imagination. Regardless of his turnabout, Cena will always be a good guy to the kids he visits. Pro wrestling might not be for everyone, but it has meant a lot to me over the years. And you can bet that it has meant the world to the hundreds of sick kids who dreamed of meeting John Cena — and then one day, saw him walking through their door! For any of us who saw his selflessness over the years, Cena’s quiet heroics have left an indelible mark on the heart.
It’s a rallying cry instilled in me from an early age. That’s what we did on my sports teams. Likewise, it’s what I try to do as a defense attorney on behalf of my clients. Even when a case looks bad, we keep fighting for hope. If we don’t win, we don’t win. But winning isn’t always what it’s about. Sometimes it’s about putting up a fight.
In recognition of Aug. 18 as World Never Give Up Day, I want to tell the story of a hero of mine who gives new meaning to that maxim. WWE star John Cena, a 17-time WWE World Champion and one of the most popular wrestlers in history, returned to the ring this year after a break, for what he says will be his last year. “Never Give Up” is Cena’s motto, emblazoned on everything from his T-shirts to his hat and sweat towels. Cena has embodied the slogan as the epitome of the “good guy,” an underdog who can overcome any challenge. But he has taken “never give up” to a new level with his record-setting performance on another front — as the world’s biggest granter of wishes to children through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a nonprofit that supports kids with life-threatening illnesses. Since beginning his pro wrestling career in 2002, Cena has fulfilled the wishes of more than 650 children and their families by meeting with them, more than twice the number granted by any other celebrity! This makes John Cena a world record- holder on two counts — as a WWE champion and a champion for sick children and their families.
Cena could have done any number of things with his time, championship image, and fame, but he chose to give it all freely to children with life- threatening illnesses.”

NO SLACKING THIS SUMMER
HELP YOUR TEEN DREAM BIG THIS BREAK
School’s out, but that doesn’t mean your teenager’s goals have to take a summer vacation! Outside the classroom, it can be a struggle for young people to stay motivated. They may only want to seek fun and may even slide into bouts of boredom. As parents, you can help guide them to stay on track and remain inspired by encouraging them to create personal goals that challenge their minds and make the most of their free time. Turn this summer into a successful strategy session with these tips to help high schoolers push themselves to grow! DREAM IT, SCHEME IT One of the best ways to help your teen beat the summer slump is to pinpoint what they want to achieve over the break. Ask them about their interests and goals, and see if there are ways you can support them. They could volunteer at an organization whose mission aligns with their values or learn a new skill they’re interested in. You can work with them to build a structured schedule, ensuring they stay on track while building in time for rest and fun activities. EARN AND LEARN Summer jobs are an excellent way for young people to learn essential life skills, understand the meaning of a hard-earned dollar, and begin to step more into their independence. If they are old enough, encourage them to apply for part-time jobs. You can offer to help with their resumes, drive them to shifts, or even do mock interviews to prepare them once they get a call back. Early jobs teach teens responsibility and what it means to be part of a team, all skills that help them progress toward their dreams and grow over the break from school. FLEX GOOD HABITS To succeed, teens must have healthy lifestyles, including regular exercise and nutritious meals. Cook healthy food together to model responsible choices and encourage them to stay hydrated by buying them a new water bottle or making fruit-infused water. Summer is the perfect time for them to get involved in a sport or another physical activity, like a yoga class, dance program, or outdoor recreation such as hiking.

THESE 5 MISTAKES CAN WRECK YOUR CLAIM
The first few minutes after a car accident can be overwhelming for any victim. The sound and impact of the crash can trigger shock and confusion. A rush of adrenaline masks the pain. Gathering evidence about what happened may be the last thing on your mind.
witness consents, make a cellphone recording of their statement or write detailed notes about what they told you. • Waiting too long to seek medical care. A victim must seek care within 14 days of an accident to qualify for Florida’s mandatory Personal Injury Protection coverage for up to $10,000 in medical bills. Also, any time gap before you seek treatment will be used against you in any effort to seek additional compensation. • Posting videos or photos of yourself having fun. Social media posts
But what you do in the first 15 minutes after a crash can make or break your case for recovering damages and winning compensation for your injuries.
Your first concern should be the safety of other victims and yourself. Call 9-1-1 for help with injuries if needed, and if your vehicle is in a dangerous spot, move it out of harm’s way if you can do so safely. Beyond that, here are five of the most common mistakes to avoid. • Failing to take photos and videos. If you can, take a video of the entire area, including the position and license plates of your car and others involved, weather conditions, skid marks, traffic lanes, and pavement markers where the vehicles came to rest. • Refusing medical attention on the scene. This is no time to be a superhero. Ask for medical attention for any injuries, suspected or real. Brushing aside injuries at this stage undermines your chances of winning the damages and compensation you deserve! • Failing to get information from eyewitnesses.
