Ken exemplified the care and nature of his community”, said Leroux of Budel, who was unable to attend. He not only gave his time to a cause as so many of the Russell Township residents do, but he actually went one step further and donated 20 per cent of As recognition during last council meeting, mayor Pierre Leroux presented Russell resident Ken Budel with a Townshipmedal and certificate, on behalf of council and Russell Township residents.

—photo Vicky Charbonneau

his liver. In doing so, he also ignited a pride in Russell Township and its residents.” Last April, Ken Budel donated part of his liver to his daughter’s friend, eight-year- old Gianna-Lynn Favilla, also fromRussell. Gianna-Lynn suffers from Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammation of the digestive sys- tem, which had left her liver in a bad shape.

Some sixmonths had passed after she had been put on the waiting list. Gianna-Lynn’s parents were almost left hopeless as a last- minute transplant was cancelled for safety reasons. That’s when Budel, who was finally proven to be a suitable match for Gianna- Lynn, turned out to be a life-changing factor in the equation. The surgery was performed

in Toronto, back in April 2016. Both are now doing great and Ken’s liver has since then 100-per cent regrown. As of today, ninety per cent of Canadians say they support organ and tissue donations, but fewer than 20 per cent have actually made plans to donate, according to the Ca- nadian Transplant Society.
