might cringe, but they know by now it’s what we do. Here is to hoping that cooler October weather shows up soon to save us from melting! Speaking of exciting seasons, this month’s issue is packed with all kinds of goodness. We are debuting a new special section highlighting Texarkana’s Industry Influencers, spotlighting some of the incredible businesses in our community. Trust me, you will want to check them out. I also have to give a shout-out to our photographer, Matt Cornelius, for doing a great job taking all the photos for this section. And don’t miss the local coffee shop guide with our very own Taste Buds. They could not sip from every single cup in town (because we have that many cool spots), but they rounded up some of the city’s best places to grab a brew, whether you are in a hurry or looking to relax. Just like our family is in the thick of a new football season, Tammie Flanagan Luthringer is kicking off an incredible new season of her own. After years in pharmaceutical sales, staying home with her kids, and working alongside a friend, she’s finally stepping into her dream of running her own business. It’s been a long time coming, and we are thrilled to share her journey. This issue is full of gems, so do not miss out. As always, we hope you enjoy everything we have poured into this issue. And don’t forget to shop and eat local—after all, we are all in this together.

M y youngest son, George, has entered a new era—his first season of tackle football. He has been waiting for this moment for what feels like forever, and to be honest, my husband Fred and I are just as excited. Until now, Fred has been the go-to coach for all the boys’ activities, which meant our lives were packed with two weeknight practices after long days at work and games every Saturday. We were all in, and I loved that season of life, but let’s be honest, it was exhausting. So, in this season, we have happily handed over all that extra responsibility to the real coaches, letting them guide George on this adventure he has been dreaming of. These days, when George has to be at school by 6:15 a.m. three mornings a week, we are not complaining one bit because we have earned our Saturdays back! Late nights after Thursday games? No problem! We are just grateful for the coaches who are putting in the hard work. Plus, some of my closest friends also have kids on the team. No more splitting time between different games, watching them compete against each other. I get to spend this season with my crew—sweating it out in the stands, waving our homemade Fatheads, and cheering enthusiastically (sometimes maybe a little too enthusiastically). The boys

MIDLIFE LAUNCH BY DR. ROBIN HICKERSON “The key to ultimate happiness and fulfillment lies within our own transformation. The more we learn and grow and evolve as individuals, the more we will find happiness and satisfaction in relationships, work, and life.” —Kristi Bowman

A ccording to Psychology Today , midlife is the center portion of a person’s life, usually between ages 40 and 65. Many people experience transitions in employment, health, physical appearance, and relationships during this phase of life. When we think of midlife, our minds often jump to thoughts of a midlife crisis, during which erratic and often reckless behaviors can surface. However, a popular trend supports thriving middle-aged men and women who are making the most of their life experiences and turning them into opportunities to launch new careers in midlife. For example, according to Caroline Castrillon’s Forbes article “Four Secrets to Success as a Midlife Entrepreneur,” the number of entrepreneurs over age 50 has skyrocketed in recent years, increasing by 50% since 2007. Michelle Quirk echoes this sentiment in the 2024 article “Starting Over in Midlife.” In the United States, more than 108 million people are 50 years or older. There is a growing population of people who expect to live—and thrive—for at least another 25 or 30 years. This has meant that the idea of a 40-year work life has expanded to a 60-year work life, reshaping what it means to work over a lifetime. With more people than ever considering a shift in their life’s work, we have an example of midlife reinvention happening right here in Texarkana, USA. “I am not retirement material,” declares Tammie Flanagan Luthringer. At 55, this licensed physical therapist recently opened her own clinic, embracing the change she felt compelled to pursue. “I am not sure I could have stopped this,”

Luthringer admits. “I thought someone should do this, and it might as well be me. I like doing things that are in the moment—maybe a little trendy—although that’s not my favorite word. I am motivated and driven, and you can’t not do it when it’s a part of who you are.” Reflecting on a recent lunch with her father, Hershel Flanagan, a well-respected entrepreneur in Texarkana, Luthringer acknowledges the shared drive between them. “My dad is the same way. He’s not retirement material, either. He knows I’m excited and nervous, but he’s always my cheerleader. I am a fan of his, and he is a fan of mine.” Flanagan beams with pride when speaking of Luthringer’s recent success and her bold decision to start her own clinic. “Her mom and I have always been proud of her and the strength and determination she shows in achieving her goals.” Luthringer graduated from Arkansas High School in Texarkana, and went on to earn a degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Naturally social and resourceful, she found traditional physical therapy limiting, so she pivoted in her early 20s to a successful career in pharmaceutical sales. Later, she chose to focus on raising her boys, becoming a stay-at-home mom. “I spent ten years at home with my kids. I put a lot of thought into how I raised them,” she reflects. “They are self-sufficient and independent. I always wanted them to have a license to live life as they wanted, and they have turned out to be good humans.” She finds herself amused when she hears her words come back to her. Recently, after a challenging day in her new clinic, her son Jed helped put things

into perspective for his mom. “Are you doing all you can?” he asked. “You’re in business for yourself. Get a stomach for it.” Clearly delighted by their mom’s success and the example she has set, both Jed and Hank Harrelson are flourishing in their chosen fields of music and living out their dreams in Nashville, Tennessee. When asked about his mom’s business venture, Jed said, “Being far from home these last few years, I have still been able to witness her growing a business from the ground up. What I know is she is great at executing a vision she has in mind. With confidence and motivation, opportunities are endless. She showed me this at a very young age.” Following her time as a stay-at-home mom, Luthringer teamed up with her long-time friend of 25 years, Theresa Fontenot Hebert, at ReNew Integrated Medical Spa. There, she practiced life coaching and physical therapy, but her ambitions eventually led her to open her own clinic right next door, aptly named Restore Physical Therapy and Wellness. “When I approached Theresa, she was happy,” Luthringer recalls. “We have a close relationship and are

like sisters—two women in the same age bracket, both driven. She has lifted me, and I think she feels it, too.” Hebert wholeheartedly agrees, “For the past 16 years, my best friend has been a vital part of my business, always doing whatever it took to make it thrive. Now, as a neighbor with her new clinic just steps away, I am beyond excited to see her start this chapter. Her hard work and dedication have always been inspiring, and watching her achieve such success is incredibly fulfilling. I’m thrilled to continue this journey together, just a few steps away!” At her practice, Luthringer and her team are dedicated to helping patients live their best lives. Specializing in pelvic floor therapy for both men and women, she provides personalized coaching to support patients in achieving their health and wellness goals. Her passion lies in helping individuals understand the crucial connection between health, stress, pain, nutrition, and movement. It is interesting to note that Luthringer finds her life’s work and passion much easier to discuss now than in the past. With platforms like TikTok and social media, the younger generation openly talks

about topics once considered taboo, such as bowel and bladder issues or sexual health. “For our generation, pee, poop, and sex are intimate subjects, and most of us need to feel relaxed and comfortable to discuss those things,” she explains. Many men and women experience these issues at some point in their lives, making it a widespread concern. Traditional physical therapists often face burnout, but Luthringer’s passion lies in providing personalized care to each patient. “My business plan isn’t about seeing the most patients. It’s about treating them in the best way possible so they can truly get better. We always strive for good outcomes.” Pelvic health for women is a hot topic in the medical field, and Luthringer is one of the first practitioners in Arkansas to earn the Pelvic Rehabilitation Practitioner (PRPC) certification. This credential not only highlights her expertise in pelvic health but also her ability to treat patients of all genders and ages. When she decided to pursue this certification, Luthringer knew she could find someone to work for her and do it well or work for someone else and excel in the role herself. Ultimately, she chose to set no limits on what she could achieve. As she envisioned starting her own clinic, she discussed it with her husband, Lifford, who fully supported her ambition. His encouragement made the leap into entrepreneurship that much easier. “I am fascinated by people’s behaviors, including my own,” she reflects. “Maybe I was preparing for this the whole time through my other careers. For the first time, I have the mental space to do this how I want, and I have more freedom with my finances. Since my first job, my dad and brother have kept me on a path toward saving money. What we are doing is successful, and I think my 50s are the only time I could have done it. Liff and the boys are proud, and that means a lot.” For some, age is just a number, and new goals are the next logical step. Tammie Flanagan Luthringer’s presence reveals that this midlife launch brings her one step closer to living her dream—and the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

abdicate that power to those who do— and often to those who do not share our perspectives, beliefs, or values. Whether we are voting for positions in local government, the state legislature, Congress, or the White House, we have the opportunity to shape the future of our Republic by electing those who reflect our principles, exhibit the character we teach our children, and will do the hard work necessary to preserve liberty for our individual lives and businesses. I won my first election to the Tyler City Council in 2005 with just 301 total votes. I guarantee you that every vote mattered in that election. By comparison, in the 2020 presidential election, approximately 155 million votes were cast nationwide, and I can guarantee you that every one of those votes mattered as well. Why? Because each vote represents a voice that matters—it’s your voice. It’s critical, however, that our elections are reserved solely for Americans. This means we must engage at the ground level to ensure that our policies, practices, and laws support free, fair, and honest elections for those who are eligible to vote and impose stiff preventative measures and penalties for those who are not. As a former County Judge, I often spoke about the importance of “SALTY” elections—Secure, Accurate, Legal, Transparent elections with YOU involved in every step of the process. Today, in my role representing the First District of Texas in Congress, I repeat this mantra often. In Article I, Section 4 of the Constitution, the Founding Fathers gave states the primary authority to administer their own elections to prevent the federal government from having unchecked control. While Congress plays a limited role, it provides oversight and support to states conducting their elections. Just months into my freshman term in Congress, I introduced legislation to restore confidence in our American election system. This bill became part of the American Confidence in Elections (ACE) Act, the key Republican election integrity measure. The ACE Act emphasizes strong election reforms while upholding the Constitution, federalism, and conservative principles.

I also co-sponsored Chip Roy’s Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which passed the House over the summer. This bill would require proof of citizenship when individuals register to vote and remove non-citizens from voter rolls. I believe this is common sense. The SAVE Act also empowers citizens with a private right of action to bring civil suits against election officials who fail to uphold the proof of citizenship requirement for voter registration. The importance of defending the American people’s right to have a say in their future has echoed throughout history. In his Gettysburg Address, President Abraham Lincoln reaffirmed that ours is a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” But President Ronald Reagan solemnly reminded us that “freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction.” His solution was that “it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people.” Reagan’s caution is a call to action for each of us. What part will each of us play to ensure that we have “SALTY” elections this November and beyond? Everyone can do something—serve as a poll worker, a party volunteer, a block walker, a voter registrar, or as an informed voter who engages with neighbors and shows up to vote. As we walk into that voting booth, let us each remember those who have gone before us to preserve our freedoms. When we cast our vote, let us speak to our children about this solemn responsibility. And let us pause to reflect on the immense privilege we enjoy as Americans—to have a say in who represents us. May these freedoms we enjoy as Americans not be relinquished on our watch. May we defend them, may we teach our children to cherish them, and may we never see a day when they are extinguished from our country. Most importantly, may God be with us in this fight, and may He bless and protect our Republic for generations to come. We must remain that shining city on a hill.

“SALTY” ELECTIONS BY NATHANIEL MORAN, UNITED STATES REPRESENTATIVE, TEXAS FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT A s fall arrives in East Texas, the temperatures drop, the crackling of bonfires fills the air, and football can be found on televisions everywhere. However, this fall, we will also observe another critically important tradition—Election Day. As we approach November, let’s remember that voting is not just a right, it is a responsibility. In a republic form of government, the power rests with the people. That power is exercised primarily through voting. When we do not vote, we

COLLABORATIVE CARE Texarkana’s Tumor Board BY LIZ FLIPPO A ccording to the American Cancer Society, over two million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States in 2024. This news will likely be followed by emotions of fear and anxiety, along with more questions than answers. Support from loved ones, neighbors, and the community may soon follow. Meal trains are planned, childcare and transportation needs are arranged, and financial, emotional, or religious support offers are extended. All of these gestures are intended to alleviate extra responsibilities and ease the treatment process ahead. What if family and friends weren’t the only

ones rallying together to create the ideal plan for the patient during cancer treatments? What if a team of various medical professionals could also collaborate, each bringing their personal expertise, creating the best treatment plan for patients? Although the terminology is more familiar in the medical field than to the general public, these meetings do exist, and they are happening right here in Texarkana. A tumor board is a collaborative meeting where a group of healthcare professionals from different specialties discuss and review individual cancer cases. Typically, a tumor board is comprised of medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists, surgical specialists, pathologists, nurses, social workers, and other professionals who can contribute to this well-rounded

Tumor Board discussions are not only about treating the particular patient, but the individuals attending these meetings are continuing their education and gaining knowledge that can expand to other patients they see in their own practices,” said Brent Bennett, Family Physician and Vice President of Physician Operations for CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic. for daily care. And if a patient will benefit by receiving care from another institution, we not only know the when to access, we also often have the direct contacts of the who,” said Dr. Matthews. As individuals continue to receive cancer diagnoses across the United States, many in Texarkana and surrounding areas find both comfort and fortitude in knowing local physicians and medical professionals are locking arms with loved ones to show support, ease worries, and cheer through every step of treatment. Patient history, images, pathology reports, and potential challenges are discussed during these meetings, allowing each specialist to provide their unique perspective and wisdom. For instance, a radiologist may provide feedback that influences the decision of surgical versus radiation therapy. Collectively, these specialists develop an individualized plan they believe will not only be effective, but also enhance the patient’s quality of life. “Excellent cancer care requires a team approach, and we have the best and only team in town,” said Dr. Charles Matthews, Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director of Hospital Cancer Services at CHRISTUS St. Michael. “We have board-certified physicians who trained at some of the most renowned institutions in the country. F or most coffee enthusiasts, a cup of coffee is an essential part of the daily routine. But for parents, it’s often a necessity. As someone who has experienced the “dad tired” phenomenon for nearly three years, I can attest to the vital role morning coffee plays in my day. Yet, I must acknowledge that “dad tired” pales in comparison to the relentless energy demands faced by my wife, Shelby, an absolute rockstar of a mom. She juggles our two boys with grace, and her coffee game is nothing short of elite—much more essential than any little pick-me-up I might need. My co-author, Ray, shares a similar story. While he may not have been a stranger to coffee, he was certainly new to the coffee shop experience. In his earlier career, he relied on a single-brew Keurig that kept him caffeinated through the workday. Now, as a husband and father of three, his coffee habits have evolved. With a job, a busy household, and a trusty Mr. Coffee pot, Ray appreciates the comfort and energy that coffee provides. However, both of us realized it was time to step outside our comfort zones and explore the local coffee scene in Texarkana. Together, we ventured to discover the hidden gems of our community, each offering unique brews that promise the perfect morning pick-me-up. Join us as we explore these local hot spots, celebrating the art of coffee and the vibrant culture surrounding it.

ALLEY CATS COFFEE BAR Andrew I love how downtown Texarkana has grown and emerged as a now vibrant part of our city. In the last several years, the area has really blossomed. One of the neat additions is Alley Cats Coffee Bar. Alley Cats is operated out of a 1940s era train car positioned next to the train tracks. There is plenty of patio seating to enjoy the sights and sounds of all the downtown activity, as well as seating inside. We took the entire family one Saturday morning and had a great experience! The coffee was delicious and our toddler enjoyed watching the trains cruise by just outside the window. Typically, at the peak of my “Dad Tired” status, my go-to order is a cup of strong black coffee. However, when trying a new place, I like to go with something that jumps off the page. In this case, I went with the Chocolate Covered Strawberry Latte, and it was fantastic! This sweet treat espresso featured a smooth vanilla iced coffee with a frozen Nutella base around the cup, topped with creamy strawberry cold foam, a beautiful milk chocolate drizzle and fresh strawberries around the rim. They also feature a fall seasonal menu and even offer some fun options for kids including being able to put a little marshmallow ghost on any iced drink! If you are looking for a new coffee spot, or just a new place to check out, Alley Cats Coffee Bar in downtown Texarkana is a must!

7 BREW DRIVE THRU COFFEE Ray

LOCAL HABIT COFFEE CO. Andrew

7 Brew is located on Richmond Road in the parking lot with Super One, Jason’s Deli, and Wingstop. This is an area I might typically try to avoid due to “traffic.” (It’s easy to get to, but you might have to sit and wait at a red light for one cycle, which I consider traffic for a small town!) However, 7 Brew has a double drive-thru that cuts down on the wait time and the coffee makes it all worth it. I think they are the Chick-fil-A of the coffee spots, always busy, always friendly, always quick, and always good. I have been dabbling in their iced drinks. The Smooth 7 has been my latest order. It’s an Irish cream and white chocolate breve. (I had to Google “breve”) The Smooth 7 hits the spot. Being a cold drink, it is a refreshing way to start the morning. I picked it up after dropping one of the kids off for school. I think a quick drink after school drop-off might accidentally become a regular thing. 7 Brew has a wide variety of hot and cold coffee drinks, smoothies, shakes, teas, and lemonades. They have something for everyone. Did you know they even have a secret menu? I have hardly ventured from my black coffee, though, so for now I will stick to the regular menu.

Much like the downtown area of Texarkana, Nash, Texas, has also seen substantial growth in recent years. One of the newer establishments, right off Highway 82 (New Boston Road) near the Kings Highway intersection, is Local Habit Coffee Co. Located in the heart of Nash, Local Habit offers a variety of coffeehouse items and some tasty sweet and savory treats. Operating out of what I would call an old farmhouse, the ambiance feels very subtle despite being steps away from a busy thoroughfare. The cozy environment features areas for setting up your personal workspace for work or studying, as well as several couches and tables for enjoying coffee with friends. You can also enjoy your coffee outside on their wrap-around porch or in the beautiful courtyard. I have indulged in many delicious items that they offer, but a few that stand out are the Peaches and Crème Muffin, the Tres Leches Latte, and the refreshing Lavender Lemonade. I’m not sure what magic was used, but somehow, they have figured out a way to bake a muffin with a smooth, creamy center that includes light, fluffy peaches surrounding the perfect amount of crème. Now, I will admit, I am not the most profound latte, cappuccino, or espresso connoisseur, but if you have ever enjoyed tres leches cake with a cup of coffee for dessert, then you’re bound to enjoy the Tres Leches Latte from Local Habit. It’s the best of both worlds all in one! I am a coffee drinker who has a pretty firm timetable on my intake of caffeine. I rarely indulge after lunchtime, so when we gathered at Local Habit later one afternoon, I opted for the Lavender Lemonade. It was the perfect caffeine-free option. My wife also loves their Lavender Honey Iced Latte, which she swears is the “perfect morning pick- me-up after a sleepless night,” and she also hasn’t stopped talking about their homemade chocolate chip cookies. Ray Local Habit has a very relaxing atmosphere with an awesome outdoor area to enjoy. The inside has a cozy cottage feel—even has a couple of board games. As the only third wave coffee shop in our area, it is a great place to grab some unique and high-quality coffee, a bite from their bakery, or one of their breakfast tacos (made from scratch). As cooler weather creeps in, so do the fancy lattes—Pumpkin Spice, Smoked Maple Bourbon, and Blueberry Cobbler. My kids enjoy the lemonade when we go, and I sneak sips when possible.
