At one time Oviedo was the capital city of Asturias so that heritage is also visible in the area. To project this historical city into the future, the city hired Santiago Calatrava to create a public building for expositions, meetings, a hotel, shopping area, and performances.
The Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses is startling different from the medieval architecture for which the city is justly famous. It has been controversial since its inception but there is no doubt that it commands the attention the city fathers sought. Seen from Monte Naranco, it rises like a giant eggshell in dazzling white dominating the skyline.
