The colossal and intimidating steel spider called “Maman” by its female artist, Louise Bourgeois, is eerily compelling. The gigantic red arch across the river bridge leading to the museum is a masterpiece of color and direction. We completed our tour of this final city of our expedition with a walk in old town Bilbao. The economic effects and success of the Museum investment were proven as we saw the bustling small businesses and the renovations and preservations of older buildings. The resurrected opera house is a standout on the tour as is the Church of San Nicolas (particularly interesting to us since we live in a section of Jacksonville called St. Nicholas).
