Sentry School Internship Expo Program Summer 2024

KYLIE ELLIS ’25

MAJORS Accounting; Business Administration HOMETOWN Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. ORGANIZATION Renaissance Learning Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. TITLE Finance and Accounting Intern

What I did: Assist with the preparation of financial documents, general ledger entries, and other accounting functions; support key projects, such as systems implementations; improve existing processes and controls, perform and maintain assigned internal controls; develop a strong understanding of accounting principles, practices, and procedures; assist accounts receivable, posting cash to collections to research contract issues; voucher accounts payable bills along with research vendor issues; account reconciliations. A few of the major projects I worked on were reformatting spreadsheets/depreciation data from what was in the Sage (fixed asset software) system to match what RSM (consultants) need for the new fixed asset software (NetGain) which is compatible with NetSuite, pulling reports (Income Statement and Balance Sheet) from NetSuite and putting them into Excel for subsidiaries to use as a reference for tax returns and then using the VLOOKUP function to pull in foreign currency from foreign subsidiary tabs into Ren (Consolidated) tab (essentially converting foreign currency amounts into U.S. dollar amounts), and reviewing exemption certificates received from RSM from a decent amount of Renaissance Learning customers and double checking that their information is accurate with the information we have on our spreadsheet (and then editing/making note of any incorrect information in the spreadsheet). What I liked: I really like that this internship allowed me to gain exposure/experience in multiple different aspects of accounting. I worked with numerous teams from Accounts Receivable to Tax to Technical Accounting and multiple more, so I really liked getting to learn about all of the different departments as well as which aspects of accounting I like and dislike. I also really liked that I got to work on multiple projects throughout this internship. While I sometimes had meetings to learn about accounting in the real world or just sat in on other department meetings, I really liked being able to help out and apply what I learned by completing projects. Finally, I overall just really appreciated the flexible culture at Renaissance as well.

Future Dream Job: Financial accounting manager at a private equity firm.
