THINGS HAVE CHANGED SINCE GRACE CAME INTO THE WORLD On March 25, Grace Rose came into the world. She wasn’t crying — not until she had her first shot. When she arrived, everything changed. It didn’t take long for me to realize what an adventure parenthood was going to be.

to my house! I also received more than my fair share of congratulations from patients and co-workers when I was at the office. At least one of my wonderful Kinetic PT teammates has

Grace is a content baby who seemed perfectly okay with entering the world. She only cries when she needs food! Unfortunately, that’s about every two hours. People

stopped by every week since Grace was born. It means a lot to know that I have all the support I’ll need from friends and family as we move forward with this new adventure — even when it gets hard. It’s good to feel prepared — after all, Alex and I are planners. We were married two years ago and always planned to have children when the time was right. A year ago, we hatched our plan: Take a big trip to Europe, then start our family. We knew we wouldn’t be able to take a trip like that alone for a while. We had an incredible time in Europe, and now we’re having an incredible experience as new parents. I went back to work the first week of May. It’s always hard to be away from Grace, but it feels nice to be with my wonderful co-workers again. Mother’s Day came and went with a different ring to it, now that I’m a mother myself. I talk about the sleep thing a lot, but Alex and I are getting the hang of it. He’s also become a proficient diaper-changer. (We both have.) We’ve adapted to our new and exciting life and are grateful every day to have this beautiful, sweet baby in our lives. We just love her to pieces. – Amanda Kranz

warned me about how little sleep I was going to get, but I didn’t realize just how hard it is at first. They say the world looks a little different when you become a parent, but I think that might just be the lack of sleep. But that’s not because I haven’t had help. When I wrote about being pregnant in February, I mentioned how great my husband, Alex, has been. He was always so supportive, doing most of the housework, cooking, and even helping me put my shoes on when I got big. Now that Grace is here, he’s stepped that up even more. That’s pretty impressive considering he works full-time and doesn’t get much sleep anymore. My mother-in-law is also lending a hand. She’s over about every other day, sharing her experience with babies and cooking and cleaning. Friends have brought me meals and offered plenty of support. I can’t thank them enough!

Patients have been amazing as well. After the newsletter was sent out, I actually had cards sent

4 Drink Hacks to Keep Your Beverage Cool

The sun is summer’s greatest ally — and greatest enemy. For every sun-soaked day at the beach, there are sunburns trying to ruin the party. For every excuse to drink an icy beverage, the sunshine’s more determined to keep the drink from staying cool. These hacks will allow you to enjoy the benefits of the summer sun without the side effect of a warm beverage. First, let’s say you just got home from the grocery store where you purchased a 12-pack of your favorite soda. You’re thirsty and it’s room temperature at best , right? Patience is a virtue, but there’s nothing wrong with accelerating the process. Fill a bowl with ice water and add a teaspoon of salt, then submerge a can of soda in the bowl. This process will cool your drink more than twice as fast as just putting it in the freezer. This other example requires less work, but it takes more freezer space. And if you’re like the rest of us, your freezer is pretty packed in the summer! Wet a paper towel and wrap it around a bottle or can before you place it in the freezer. The contents inside will cool much more quickly. If you have more time to plan, this hack will keep your drink cold for longer. Ice doesn’t fit in a bottle, and freezing your beer or other beverage will get you to

Slushy Town in a hurry. Fill an empty bottle about halfway, put the cap on, and place it in the freezer on its side. When it’s frozen, pour your favorite beverage inside — the ice from top to bottom will keep the contents cool on the go. Bonus Hack: This has nothing to do with the sun, but is still a neat way to make drinking your beverage easier. If you go fancy and use a straw when you drink from a can, you know how hard it is to get the straw to stay put. Spin the can’s tab around and feed the straw through it. Now you’ll have a well-behaved straw that doesn’t shift around when you need it to be there for you. The sun is hot, and the summer is long. You need the comfort of a cool beverage to help you get through it. Keep cool, wear sunscreen, and have fun!

“I was diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in both knees. I was very restricted in what I could do; it was not a quality of life I was used to. I had knee replacements, and with excellent guidance, patience, and kind words of encouragement from Mike, I found myself getting stronger physically. I am proof and a proud believer that PT is essential to a complete recovery

“After a few sessions of PT, I am doing much better. The set of PT exercises chosen by Emilie worked very well on my knee. I can walk, squat, and stand up without pain or difficulty. I am very grateful to Emilie for helping me to be more mobile and teaching me how to exercise to keep up with my daily activities.”

and a return to mobility. I continue to do it on my own and work hard. I can’t thank everyone enough at Kinetic (especially Mike) for the care they all showed me during my recovery and for helping me regain my quality of life! They are the best!”

The Experts Say No You hear it with the pros, and it applies to you too: Sports injuries come packaged with physical therapy. You may not be LeBron, but your body works — and breaks — the same way, whether you have a sprained ankle or a torn ACL. Why is physical therapy even necessary when surgery and medication are supposed to fix the problem? According to Eric Dube, a U.S. Ski Team physical therapist, it has a lot to do with Mother Nature’s healing process. “Simply put, it takes the body time to change,” he says. “It takes soft tissue time to heal and mature, and there is also the fact that muscle strength and quality movement needs to return to normal levels.” Most orthopedic surgeons recommend seeing a PT within days of surgical repair or the injury itself. Physical therapy will help you focus on four things:

• Restoring range of motion • Protecting healing ligaments • Activating leg muscles • Slowly returning to a normal stride

Facilitating those processes is a matter of time and function. Your body is governed by biological laws, and you can’t force those laws to work faster. The headline of the article poses the question, is post- injury physical therapy optional? Well, technically, everything is optional. You’ve heard the saying about death and taxes — everything else is up to you. But to restore your body and eliminate pain, physical therapy will get you there and perhaps prevent future injuries. To learn more about the process of recovery — what to expect, what to do, and what not to do — talk to an experienced PT today.

This summer, skip the expensive hustle and bustle of an overcrowded theme park. After a vacation like that, you’ll feel like you need another. As far as getaway destinations go, Yellowstone National Park, sprawling across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, is a little more expansive. More than 3 million visitors flock to its astonishing peaks, multicolored pools, and dramatic geothermal geysers each year, but as you travel across Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres, it’s unlikely you’ll see much of them. And the sheer variety of unparalleled activities to explore means fun for the whole family. Make sure to check out Old Faithful, the most famous geothermal geyser in the world, with eruptions averaging a whopping 130 vertical feet. Or if it’s majesty and exploration you’re itching for, hike one of the many trails along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The views across the Yellowstone River, with clay cliff faces and tree-covered mountains in every direction, are unlike any other. Also, be sure to investigate the Grand Prismatic Spring, which, besides its otherworldly rainbow waters, is known for being the largest hot spring in the U.S. For many, though, the biggest draw of the park is the wildlife. Yellowstone is home to the largest bison population on public land. It houses more mammals

than anywhere else in the lower 48 states, 150 species of birds, and huge populations of native fish, to name a few. Just driving around the park, you’re apt to see moose, deer, elk, mountain goats, and, if you’re lucky, grizzly bears, mountain lions, or wolves. Go boating, catch a fish, scale a mountain, ride a horse — the things to do vary as much as the breathtaking landscape. If you’re looking for an affordable, relaxed, and wide-open family vacation this summer, Yellowstone is a no-brainer.
