A nother Westminster week- end is behind us and I’m looking forward to upcom- ing National Specialties for Affenpinschers, Brussels Griffons, Cavalier, Maltese, Poms and others for April. Lots of exciting new puppies and of course the wonderful new Specials dogs being campaigned in 2017. Warm congratulations to the Owner Handlers who had so much success winning Best of Breed at Pro- gressive and Westminster as well as the Toy specialties at the Pennsylvania and of course the Yorkshire Specialties grand and glorious shows. Both the Hotel Pennsylvania and the New Yorker did a fabulous job of taking care of exhibitors who came with mul- tiple dogs and they came from all over the world! The excitement in the lobby of the three hotels was felt throughout with friends

Most of them are competing not just in the Juniors competition but against seasoned professionals and owner han- dlers. Keep up the good work! There has been a great deal of dis- cussion on feeding dogs commercial diets as some have had recalls and often multiple times. While there are great foods available exhibitors have inquired about cooking for their dogs so I have included a recipe for you to try. You can find online information for additional recipes. It is a lot of work to prepare food that includes all the nutri- ents your animals need so cooking is not something on my agenda.
SLOW COOKER RICE & BEEF
2½ lbs. ground beef 1²⁄ ³ cups brown rice 1 cup kidney beans, rinsed and drained

CHICKEN STRIP CHEWS Use boneless chicken breasts cut in appropriate size strips, put in the oven on a baking sheet at 325 degrees and bake until they are very well done.
Stir all ingredients in the crockpot and add 4 cups of water. Cook covered on low for 5 hours or you can cook 2 or 3 hours on high. Stir and cool; refrigerate what you do not immediately feed. This makes about 11 cups of cooked food.

The numbers make me feel there are still many serious and knowledgeable people who care about their respective breeds and the sport in general. Juniors are such a talented and hard working group that are the upcoming breeders and handlers of tomorrow.
Top quality commercial diets that are breed specific are my personal choice but the recipes on this page might be a fun option for your picky eater. I enjoyed meeting new people at the local Ocala dog shows and got lots of puppy kisses, too. Remember, do not get lost in the other magazines, be found in

FINDING THE BEST COMPANION HOME FOR PUPPIES

H ow do you measure suc- cess in placing puppies? I never knew that my many years in corporate uman Resources and operating my own management and career counsel- ing practice would help me in my dog show venture. Many years ago, in my past life, I was in Human Resources Management with Fortune 500 com- panies. The first thing you learn is a very effective way to both identify and employ the best candidate for the vacant job position. The method involves a series of steps or “gates”, through a list of questions that help to identify both strengths and weaknesses. What happens when a breeder has a litter and picks the most promising puppy from that litter? Unless it is a singleton litter, you eventually will face the issue of plac- ing the remainder of the puppies in loving homes. As a reputable breeder, you most certainly want the best homes for your puppies. There are a number of resources to help place these inno- cent little creatures. If you are a mem- ber of a breed club, they might have a “Breeder Referral” list or a person responsible for helping puppy buyers hook up with a responsible breeder. There is also the AKC Breeder referral list. If you are a Breeder of Merit, you can list your litter on the AKC Mar- ketplace for free. There is usually an informal network of breeders in your particular breed which you can use to announce your puppies, and in return, assist other network breeders in finding potential homes for their litters. If you have a website, you are able to put information there, consisting of not
only information about you and your puppies, but adorable pictures which most people find irresistible. I also keep a potential puppy list of inquiries. If you keep this list, you can go back and contact these people to see if they are still interested. Last, but not least, there is word of mouth, which I find quite reliable. In the process of finding excellent homes, I find myself tracing back to my old tried and true ways of discerning an excellent home from a list of interested people. In the Human Resources inter- viewing process, these are referred to as “knock out questions”. First, I find out exactly what this person is inter- ested in. Some interests could be a male or female, puppy or young adult, highly active dog or a passive, quiet soul. Next, my questions focus on the people and their environment. Do they have children; if so, how many and ages? Are they living in an apartment or home with a yard? If they have a yard, is the yard fenced with slats close enough to keep a puppy confined? What kind of home do they have; two story with steep stairs or a one level home? Do they have any other pets and if so, breed, age and are they neutered? If a person passes these knock out questions, we continue onto a more formal selective interview. Questions as to the sincerity of homing, loving and caring for a puppy begin. I am very interested to see if this potential home is familiar with the breed, so questions and discussions regarding the posi- tive and negative issues with Chin are discussed. What is their timing as to acquiring a puppy? Are they willing to wait for a healthy puppy or do they
want a puppy right now? If you don’t have one available, will they just move on to the next breeder? I am also very careful to assess and match the pup- pies and their temperaments with their potential homes. As we continue the discussions, I take that time to explain how my timing regarding weaning, socializ- ing and health necessities are done. That would involve the time it takes to wean a puppy, socialize and also begin inoculations. The next step is about a pet/com- panion contract. If you don’t have one, get one. This will spell out in writing both the breeder’s assurances and the potential owner’s obligation. We review the contract in detail so there aren’t any misunderstandings for either party. If all goes well here, we move on. The final step is the most rewarding. The day the new owner/family comes to get their puppy. I have a packet all ready. In their packet will be: the AKC Registration papers, health records, signed contracts by both parties, a bag of special chewys, a favorite toy and a list of places to get them. Next they will also receive a small container of food and a sample of the puppy’s special treats. Most people have already pur- chased the same food, but I include it in their puppy bag. Next is a business card with my contact information. The new parents now have a breeder. They are told if they have any questions, day or night I am available to assist them in their new life with their new addition. I have been able to successfully place many puppies by using this step by step interviewing and placement process. The measure of success is sim- ple: Through the process, you establish yourself as a trusted resource and are rewarded by the happy faces, pictures and thank you notes from new proud parents, not only on their first day, but days and years after!

CALLING ALL JUDGES TO HELP SAVE BREED TYPES

M y breed is Chihuahuas and we have a prob- lem. It is not a problem unique to Chihuahuas, nor is it atypical except in the specifics of the problem. We are losing important elements of breed type and the dogs lacking these essential elements are being put up in the ring over dogs of stronger type. Allow me to explain. In the GSD, the desire for the extreme rear has result- ed in dogs bred that end up crippled. They are unable to perform or even live a full life, with the extreme angula- tion which causes the rear to be or to become crippled. The dogs are pitiful and painful to watch. They are bred to exceed the standard. Faults of gait are considered very serious, but these dogs are often put up in the ring because of a 90-degree rear angle instead of a near 90-degree angle, which has become a fad. This is a disservice to the breed. In Chihuahuas, the general appear- ance calls for a graceful, alert, swift- moving, compact little dog with a saucy expression and with Terrier-like quali- ties of temperament. The standard then goes on to elaborate on what consti- tutes the generalization given. Unfortunately, breeders are import- ing and/or breeding dogs into their lines with extremely short muzzles. Chihuahuas have never had this trait before. The muzzles resembled those of Japanese Chins or French Bull- dogs. They are declared adorable and cute, and sell very well at high prices. They are considered preferable in the show ring to the Chihuahua that has a
correct, moderately short muzzle with lean cheeks and jaws. This is a disser- vice to the breed and is certainly incor- rect. It manifests problems in bites, breathing and expression. It is damag- ing both to health and to appearance called for in the standard. Another problem is the lack of proper topline in the Chihuahuas. The standard calls for a level topline. Recent winning dogs have been exhibiting a topline that slopes from high in the front to lower in the rear. There has even been a sci- entific debate about what causes this and emphasis that this sloping topline is correct because of morphology. The proponents of this view utilize top win- ning dogs who have presented this slop- ing topline as a prototype for the new and improved Chihuahua. Level means level; not sloped, dipped, roached or bumped. With the emphasis put on the sloping topline, breeders are demand- ing and getting high prices for these specimens because the judges are put- ting them up. This is a detriment to the breed. There is no prototype for a new and improved breed specimen—the standard is set. Any overt changes are incorrect and should not be rewarded in the ring. If breeders are breeding Chins into the line to produce the extreme muzzles we see in the ring or import- ing dogs bred overseas that have this atypical attribute, it’s for two purpos- es: making money and/or winning in the ring. These dogs are not pure- bred, but are mutts. A DNA test would reveal the discrepancy in dogs with an atypical muzzle.
It is not possible to control John Q. Public’s buying preference. Adorable is one of his highest criteria in choos- ing a pet. It is not, however, included in the standard. Nor is the attribute of being cute. The buyer is impressed by the breeder’s explanation that this look is what is winning now. We therefore must appeal to the judges to help save breed types. Every judge has to know the standard for every breed he or she judges. Please adhere to breed type in judging, regard- less of how cute these extreme speci- mens may be. While there are no per- fect dogs, please avoid putting up dogs that are mutations of breed type which, in Chihuahuas, would include the over- ly short muzzle and/or sloping topline. We, as committed breeders and exhibitors, depend upon our judges to maintain proper breed type through their example of rewarding the dog nearest the standard. Breed type cannot be saved without your consis- tent and dedicated refusal to reward animals that are extreme in any way. Our breed calls for a well-balanced, swift-moving little dog with level topline and moderate muzzle. There is not room here to discuss the rest of the standard, but these are the two main issues at this time. Judges, we breeders and exhibi- tors believe in you and your incorrupt- ible judgment. We depend upon you. Help us save breed type across the board; the future of our breeds depend upon you.

AKC FAST CAT ® by LEW OLSON
F ast CAT ® is one of the new- est titling events in AKC, and consists of a fenced area of 100 yards long and approxi- mately 20-30 feet wide. The dogs chase a lure from the starting line, and are timed to the end of the 100 yard straight course. If your dog likes to chase things, this could be the sport for you and your dog! The times are converted into miles per hour, and when a certain point level is achieved after a few runs, the title of BCAT is awarded. And the pay off for Toy breeds is that there are time com- pensations given for height! And each dog runs one at a time. I found out that Dallas Air Dogs, in Midlothian, Texas (near Dallas) was going to be running six trials in three days, on December 31, January 1 and January 2. I called Jill Davis (who loves performance events) and she was excit- ed as I was! She brought two of her Brus- sels Griffons, “Miles” and “Brooks”; and I brought a Brussels Griffon, “Andy”, and my Toy Manchester, “Hutch”. I had a CA (Lure Coursing Ability title) on Hutch, and Jill has Drag Racing titles on her two Griffons (UKC titles, used to be known as Terrier racing). We got up early to check out the course and situation. The course had chain link fencing all around it, and enough length to accommodate the 100 yard run (or about 140 yards leav- ing good room at the end and start for the handler and dog). They had a timer on a tower, as well as a lure course set up that went from the start to the end,
and back again, to bring the dog back. The lure was a piece of white plastic. The course was flat and on grass. So many people were so excited about this new event that the club was able to fill all six events! Most people who brought dogs were new to this, but it was wonderful to see the dogs so excited and so willing to run. There were many different breeds running all weekend from Great Danes, to German Shorthair Pointers, Whippets, a Plott Hound, Doberman Pinchers, all types of Spaniels, Corgis to Chihuahuas, Bos- ton Terriers, Chinese Crested, York- shire Terriers and much more! Almost all qualified in their runs! A few were reluctant to leave their owner, but the owner was allowed to go to the end of the course and call their dogs. I never saw so many people excited at a per- formance event before, and it was truly spectacular to watch all these breeds run so fast with such excitement to run to try and catch the lure! I truly recom- mend this sport to any dog owner, and that includes all Toy breeds! Each dog was as excited for the next event each day, and there was much barking and whining in excitement as they waited for their turn. Everyone was clapping and congratulating each dog as they finished the course! Some dogs were so enthusiastic to run, they needed to be held on very tightly until the timer started the start of their run. The nice thing about showing a Toy breed is that we get a handicap due to their height. The rules state:
• 18" or greater = handicap is 1.0 • 12" up to less than 18" = handicap is 1.5 • Below 12" = handicap is 2.0 Three of our four dogs achieved their AKC Fast CAT ® title that weekend, called BCAT. You can continue to com- pete after this, to gain more titles. The more times your dog qualifies on runs, your dog can achieve more titles. There are also other lure coursing events, and each of them offers AKC titles. I can’t recommend this sport highly enough, and dog with a bit of drive and the ability to chase will love it! I have been “out of dogs” for almost two years. Having had dogs for most of my life, it seems strange not to have a puppy beside me as I sit here at the computer. But there comes a time when it is time to quit. An option would have been to send a dog off with a handler, but that just wouldn’t work for me. We did that a few times and had some great wins but I didn’t have that special feeling of tak- ing a young dog in the ring and hoping that he enjoyed it as much as I did. Was his tail up? Hopefully it was, but if not he may be entered at several more small shows for experience and if he was not enjoying it by then, he stayed home, or in some cases, he went to pet home and spent the rest of his life living in luxury on someone’s lap. Of course, if he was of that special quality, we may use him for breeding, if we bred to a really great Griffon with showmanship that just wouldn’t quit. I chose to never double up on a fault, conformation nor showman- ship. Of course, it didn’t always turn out as I had planned, but when it did work, WHEEEE! When I decided to retire, I went the whole way and Treyacres prefix is retired also. This does not mean that I will never be a spectator at ringside. It is always great to meet old friends, tell stories of years ago and watch the ring full of pups as we pick out that Best In Show prospect. 1. Tell us three conformation characteristics you consider criti- cal in your breeding program. Head, bone and topline; however, I must add temperament. 2. What dog that you have bred have you been most excited about and why? If I have to pick one I would prob- ably say Ch. Treyacres Zorro. I can’t say he was definitely the best Griff I bred. I know that he sired many great cham- pions and was an asset to the breed.
But the most exciting moment I can remember was when he went Best In Show at 10 months of age, with yours truly at the end of the lead! The rest of his show career was with a handler and I just watched! 3. What are your thoughts on importing and exporting? Years ago we imported some nice Griffons from England and I feel that they added a lot to our breeding pro- gram. I have exported several to a good friend in Europe who is starting his own breeding program. If anyone who chooses to export, do your homework and make sure that you know where your dogs are going. 4. To date, what has been your high point as a breeder? This goes back to question #2. But having said that, I must mention that Zorro’s dam, Ch. Treyacres Every Good Thing (call name, “Goody”) won her first group at 8 months of age. I just held the lead and she won it on her own. 5. What is your pet peeve in the show/breeding world? Too many breeders are kennel blind. Also, I have taught Judges Education quite a bit and it is interesting to watch

my home, large exercise area and whelping room. 10. At what age do you determine a puppy to be show quality? This depends, some pups develop early and are ready to go and others mature very late. Some of the earlier questions/answers cover this sub- ject. Do not force a young pup to go around a crowded ring and expect him to enjoy it. But there are some that thrive on this. So if they enjoy it, go for it. Just make sure that they love doing it. 11. What is the greatest health concern for your breed today? It has been awhile since I have bred a litter or shown a Griffon, so I have no answer to this question. 12. If you were not involved with showing dogs, what would you do? Poodles, Bull Terriers and more than I can remember. Some of these dogs were just house pets, some were shown at in breed but all were special. It is difficult to put the time frame that all of this took place but one day, Dayne, my daughter, wanted a small dog that she could love and hold. At that time she was about 6 years old. She had been training and showing her Minia- ture Poodle in obedience and finished her CD in 4 straight shows... and in the ribbons 3 of those times. I had been asked to start an obedience class by the local Blennerhassett Kennel Club and these classes continued for many years. Later I became an AKC obedi- ence judge for Novice, Open, Utility and Tracking. But during all of this time, Dayne would not give up on getting a small dog. We made contact with professional handlers, Jerry and Elaine Rigden and they had a small beautiful red rough Brussels Griffon that they had and they offered it to Dayne as a pet. Well, we were hooked on the breed. Our quest took us to Jim and Sally Wheeling (Hazeldean Brussels Griffons).

Is there a grooming secret you would like to share? Accent the positive and eliminate the negative! 7. Do you inbreed, linebreed or outcross and why? I did not do much “inbreeding”—but some line breeding. But when I did see a Griff that I liked and thought it had something that my bitch/dog could use. I did not hesitate to outcross. But if it had noticeable faults or it had produced pups that had noticeable faults, I would run the other way. 8. Do you think your current standard is adequate? Yes. 9. Something not mentioned before—webbed feet. Some Griffons are born with webbed feet. This often goes with a kinked tail that is hopefully near the end of the tail, so that it will be gone when the tail is docked. Do not be upset when you see a pup born with webbed foot and kinked tail as this goes with a beautiful head and good bone! The pup in this photo is called Mr. Webb. Wonder why?

F or the last couple years, I have been delighted to find newer breeder/exhibitors sticking with the breed and remain- ing anxious to learn. I hesitate to call them novice because many are already producing very high quality Griffons. Some of these ‘newer’ people are even interested in pedigree research. I have been concerned that this kind of dedication had slipped to a bygone era. Are we seeing a turning point? Does the decline noticed by AKC in entries and many other aspects of our sport, perhaps instead mean that the chaff is falling by the wayside, letting some very quality younger enthusiasts remain? I hope this is the case. It was recently called to my attention that some TERMS AND INTERPRETA- TIONS of the Standard that we older breeders take for granted, are not always clear with some of the newer people. TERM: LAY BACK OR LAY IN For instance, when we speak of lay back or lay in , we are speaking of the nose leather itself. The leather should be black, large and wide with open nostrils. The top of the nose pad will be tilted back in toward the forehead, forming the lay back or lay in . AKC Standard: “Nose very black, extremely short, its tip being set back deeply between the eyes so as to form a lay-back. The nostrils large.” I have found that there are many ways that the actual nostril opening can look and function. I am not a veteri- narian and I do not in any way consider myself an expert on internal tissues of the airways. I only have practical knowledge with my own observations and breeding practices. I have been peering into brachyce- phalic nostril openings for a good 65 years. Before that I was aware of the Bostons snoring loudly on my bed. By 1964, when I started in Pugs, I decided that free (and silent) airflow in my dogs
was important to my own sleep as well as their health. Stenotic nares didn’t seem to be a big issue in Pugs then, but elongated soft palates definitely were evident in many Pug lines. The tendency of collapsed trachea of older dogs in all our brachy- cephalic breeds is an ongoing concern. Collapsed Trachea is not just caused by heredity or years of lead pressure on the neck, but also can be caused by the stress of struggling to get air through narrow passages. Some good functioning nostrils can look too small or narrow. But because these dogs sometimes have open clear wind below the vertical slits and large internal airways, they can perform nor- mally and live long, healthy lives. Many dogs that are having difficulty breathing will seem uncomfortable especially when being picked up. Some- times they almost look like they are chewing gum, but instead they are prob- ably just trying to catch a good breath of air. When judging you will reward the black, large, wide-open nose pad with proper lay back called for in our Standard, when you can find it on a quality specimen.
