Occupational therapy is a safe, effective, and non-invasive treatment option. While this kind of therapy can relieve pain resulting from a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, pediatric occupational therapy more commonly focuses on helping children who struggle with these conditions listed below to develop the necessary skills for growing into independently functioning adults. Reavis R hab & Wellness Center’s pediatric occupational services canaddressmany conditions, including the following: • Sensory integration If your child needs occupational therapy, their therapist may work with themon their social skills, taking care of themselves (grooming habits), as well as their cognitive skills and fine motor skills. Your child’s treatment plan will also focus on increasing physical activity, balance levels, range of motion, and flexibility. The Importance of Pediatric Therapy In Your Child’s Growth A pediatric therapist can work with your child to help them learn, grow, and play. Therapy will assist your child in developing or improving their fine and gross motor skills, and language skills. The overall goal of pediatric therapy is to help your child be more independent as they age so that they can live a normal life. Sometimes your child’s therapy will only involve play, like jumping, climbing, or dancing. Other treatments may focus on specific tasks like getting dressed, eating on their own, or holding a crayon or pencil correctly for writing. Parents are always provided with helpful information and guidelines to work on with your child at home. Your role in your child’s therapy is just as important (if not more) than the role of your child’s pediatric therapist! I have had the pleasure of being a bilingual speech language pathologist (English and Spanish) for 6 years now in the public school system, home health, and now, the outpatient clinical setting. I started my career very differently with a Bachelor’s in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin and later obtained my Masters in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Texas Woman’s University in Denton. I initially started out my current career as a special education teacher and fell in love with the profession. I have extensive experience in teaching children with cognitive impairments, other health disorders, learning disabilities, autism, and was part of the autism assessment team in the public school system. I am bilingual in Spanish and English and perform bilingual evaluations and treatment in both languages. After working in school districts in Texas for 11 years, first as a special education teacher and then, as a Speech Language Pathologist, I decided to join the Reavis Rehab family in the summer of 2018. Communication is such an integral part of life, not merely to meet individual wants and needs, but also as part of our daily social interaction with one another. Language brings us closer together and I love that I get to help kiddos and adults alike reach their maximum potential to strengthen ties and feel connected within their community!
