Partnering With Communities At Trex, we are dedicated to making a positive difference in the places where we operate.
Environmental Outreach Through NexTrex
NexTrex® Grassroots Program
We believe that for the circular economy to be achieved, everyone needs access to participate. Otherwise, items like plastic bags and PE film will continue to be discarded in landfill when instead they could be returned to productive uses such as the manufacturing of Trex products. Our community-based NexTrex programs help remove the logistical barriers that can hinder PE film recycling and create stronger incentives for community members to become involved.

We do this by actively reaching out and investing in our local communities. We put our corporate values into practice by donating to charitable organizations and encouraging our employees to volunteer for causes that matter. Our position as a leading recycler of PE film creates valuable opportunities for us to help make recycling simpler and more accessible for consumers throughout North America. We involve thousands of municipalities, nonprofits, small businesses, and schools in reclaiming waste PE and promoting environmental awareness through the NexTrex® Grassroots Movement and our Plastic Film Recycling Challenge. We have established centralized drop-off locations for recycling PE film in more than 84 municipalities, nonprofits, and other qualifying community organizations. To help participating grassroots organizations scale up their recycling, Trex removes obstacles preventing participation, offering options for baling equipment, storage containers, and collection site sheds. We also distribute promotional
materials such as signage, press releases, and collection bins to help launch new locations. Once 20,000-40,000 pounds of PE film are collected at a drop-off location, we transport the materials to a Trex facility and provide a cash rebate to the participating organization.
NexTrex Grassroots Movement
Tailored for organizations that may not meet the volume criteria for commercial recycling, the NexTrex Grassroots Movement program makes community recycling more widely accessible.
BEAUTIFYING A COMMUNITY, BAG BY BAG Lake Frederick Conservation Club is among thousands of community groups helping us transform waste PE film into eco-friendly outdoor living products. Since joining the NexTrex® Plastic Film Recycling Challenge in 2022, residents of this 55+ community in northern Virginia have collected approximately 7,000 pounds of plastic bags and other forms of discarded PE film for re-use in our manufacturing operations. In addition, club volunteers have offered to help other local organizations launch their own NexTrex recycling efforts. We recently awarded Lake Frederick Conservation Club its fourth bench from the Trex® Outdoor Furniture Collection in recognition of the community’s contribution to the NexTrex Recycling Program. Two of these benches are located in native pollinator gardens maintained by the club, while the others sit on a hillside overlooking Lake Frederick.
5.3M In 2024, we recycled more than 5.3 million pounds of waste PE collected by local organizations through NexTrex.
