Drifting Isn’t A Strategy: 8 Steps To Navigate Turbulent Times BY MAARTJE VAN KRIEKEN The storm isn’t coming. It’s already here. And many leaders are real- izing they’re sailing without instruments. The current business climate is a storm of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Strategic plans are outdated overnight. Decision-making feels like a risk. And yet—standing still isn’t an option. Leaders are under pressure to keep moving, whilst everything keeps shape shifting. You are not alone, research shows that: • Two-thirds of executives struggle to make decisions fast enough during volatile times.

IP To Explore Building Packaging Facility In SLC Memphis, Tennessee based International Pa- per (IP) has confirmed the strategic explora- tion of a new sustainable packaging facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. IP says the exploration of a prospective new facility is part of its strategic growth plans to expand manufacturing capabilities in the US. The company is eyeing Utah to increase its footprint in the region and better serve customers by meeting the growing demand for high-quality, sustainable packaging. “This exploration is part of Packaging Solu- tions North America’s strategic growth initia- tive to enhance our regional manufacturing footprint in the US. Salt Lake City would be a new market for IP and an opportunity to bet- ter serve existing customers in the region and grow strategically with new customers,” said John Berry, Group Vice President and Gener- al Manager, Packaging Group West. If pursued, IP says this proposed new fa- cility will feature cutting-edge technology and equipment when will help enable their ability to deliver innovative and sustainable packag- ing solutions to a growing customer base in the western US. • 70 percent of business transformations fail, often due to misalign- ment and unclear direction, and that was in the ‘old world’. • Half of leaders admit to delaying decisions when markets become unstable. Here’s the dilemma: when chaos hits, everyone is working hard, but without coordinated direction. The energy is real, the effort is sincere, but there are only limited results to show for it. Conventional business management practices are largely geared towards maintaining steady state operations, or planned projects, changes or growth. Planning cy- cles are driven by calendar years, historical performance data and ne- gotiated delivery times. But today, you do not have the level of control over your world for these tools to still facilitate progress. And to make it through this storm, leaders need more than motivation, they need navigation, as after this one, there will be another, and another. CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

Turn Trim Waste into Revenue One Size Never Fits All G.F. Puhl Designs Scrap Systems to Meet YOUR Needs

Our customers have various needs for scrap and dust collection systems based on several factors including building layout, available space for the equipment, distance conveyed, local codes for noise and height as well as air permitting and available operating and maintenance staff. Change the game with a custom-designed system by G.F. Puhl. It can make all the difference. When it comes to trim collection systems, there’s virtually no problem we haven’t solved.

Problem: No room for a scrap system inside the building. Solution: If your building footprint won’t support additional trim waste equipment, go outdoors. Exterior systems like an above-roof or ground-level concentrator will boost your capacity. Problem: No way to monitor the system unless you’re on site. Solution: G.F. Puhl leads the pack with proprietary technology that makes it possible to monitor the system from wherever you are. Request PLC touch screen controls with real-time pressure balancing and real-time remote via your smart phone or computer. G.F. Puhl’s expert engineering team has more than 50 years of combined experience designing, fabricating installing, and commissioning trim and dust collection systems of every kind, including outdoor systems with dual compactors, above roof systems with single or multiple cyclones and balers and below roof screen separator systems. If you’re looking for a vendor that can help you solve the scrap collection puzzle once and for all, contact G.F. Puhl today. 615.230.9500 or sales@gfpuhl.com

Problem: No space for a baler room. No budget for baler room staff. Solution: Try outdoor auger compactors requiring minimal operator interaction. Auger compactors achieve higher compaction than conventional ram compactors with less maintenance and no hydraulic fluid. Dual compactor systems allow continuous running while the waste hauler is changing out the container. Problem: No budget for a new system. Solution: Request a custom system with remanufactured equipment. G.F. Puhl sells remanufactured balers, blowers, separators, filters, and more. The savings can be significant and the warranty adds peace of mind. Problem: Your existing system doesn’t meet codes and the inspector has notified you of a problem with the existing system. Solution: G.F. Puhl’s NFPA trained engineering team designs NFPA and OSHA compliant systems that are as safe as they are durable. Problem: Dust is out of control. Solution: G.F. Puhl systems are designed to minimize the hazards created by ambient dust. Dust briquetters, certified explosion isolation valves, flame front diverters, and other safety features maximize safety.

Precision & Peace Of Mind: NEWW Investment In Kolbus RD 115S Backed By SUN Automation For NEWW Packaging and Display (NEWW), delivering superior packag- ing solutions requires more than a strong legacy—it demands precision engineering, continuous investment, and trusted partnerships. With the decision to purchase the Kolbus RD 115S rotary die cutter, NEWW is once again demonstrating its commitment to innovation, backed by the confi- dence of long-standing support from SUN Automation Group. Founded in 1834 as E. Murdock Company, NEWW transitioned from wood to corrugated packaging in the 1940s and is now one of the pre- mier independent corrugated converters in the United States. Headquar- tered in Gardner, Massachusetts, NEWW operates with a clear mission: to exceed customer expectations through creativity, service, and state- of-the-art technology. Their recent installation of the Kolbus RD 115S is a natural extension of that vision.

• Only standard hand tools are required for all maintenance • Direct drive with no chains or sprockets • No tools for media change required » just zip it up » media change out in minutes • Filter is accessible for visual inspection during operation, Significant Advantages Over Conventional Dust Filtration Technology

» no shutdown required • Filter media advantages - high dust collection efficiency

“Our customers demand more sophisticated printing and faster turn- around times. We needed a machine that could keep up,” said Ben Urqu- hart, Sales Manager at NEWW. “The RD 115S gives us high-end print qual- ity with full servo control across five color decks. It’s accurate, consistent, Designed for converters who demand the highest standards, the Kol- bus RD 115S is a servo-driven flexographic rotary die cutter known for its production flexibility. These capabilities made it an ideal replacement for NEWW’s aging Hycorr machine. Beyond the technical specs, it was the relationship behind the machine that made the difference. “With SUN Automation Group managing the aftermarket support, we have peace of mind for the future of this important machine,” said Urqu- hart. “We’ve had a trusted relationship with SUN for over 30 years, going back to their lead edge feeders. Their team understands the indepen- dent converter’s world—quick response times, honest pricing, and a true commitment to uptime.” Confidence In Aftermarket Support and built for performance.” Engineered For Excellence For independent converters, downtime is costly, and service reliability is non-negotiable. That’s where SUN’s expanded role as the exclusive North American agent for Kolbus makes a critical impact. With access to SUN’s domestic infrastructure, parts inventory, and ex- pert technicians, Kolbus customers, like NEWW, benefit from responsive, localized support. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

PPC Members Inspire Next Generation Through TICCIT Program BY THE PAPERBOARD PACKAGING COUNCIL This spring, we proudly celebrate the outstanding com- mitment of our member companies to sustainability edu- cation through the Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees (TICCIT) program! Across the country, PPC members led hands-on events in schools, communities, and even local zoos, teaching thousands of students about the vital role trees, recycling, and paperboard packaging play in build- ing a sustainable future. TICCIT is a hallmark of our industry’s educational out- reach, showing students how trees are used to make re- newable, recyclable paperboard cartons—and how those same cartons can return to the earth. Through engaging

lessons and the symbolic planting of tree saplings in bio- degradable paperboard containers, the program demon- strates the circular nature of paperboard packaging and PPC’s commitment to environmental stewardship. This year, PPC member companies collectively reached more than 7,500 students and planted over 8,000 saplings through TICCIT events, marking one of the program’s most impactful years to date. From small classrooms to multi-location campaigns, ppc member companies designed creative, hands-on pro- grams that went far beyond the basics: • Accord Carton in Alsip, IL, hosted an energetic event at Paul Revere Elementary School. On April 25, the team worked with 150 students in the school’s lunchroom, guiding them through TICCIT lessons and a tree-plant- ing activity. • American Carton Company also made a strong im-

pact on Earth Day by visiting more than 100 students on April 22. Their program reinforced the critical message of tree re- newal, paperboard recycling, and the role packaging professionals play in advancing sustainability. • At Autajon Packaging, 55 students par- ticipated in a vibrant, interactive session that explored the connection between na- ture and packaging. The company proudly shared the experience online, extending the impact to the broader community. • Case Paper Co. expanded the reach of the TICCIT program in 2025 by engaging more than 320 students across two com- munities. In Sunman, Indiana, 1st and 4th grade students at Sunman Elementary ex- plored the forestry and papermaking pro- cess, examined samples of various folding carton substrates, and participated in an in- teractive “sheeter” simulation that brought industry concepts to life. In East Hanover, New Jersey, Case Paper collaborated with 3rd and 6th-grade classes, distributing 260 saplings. The events received enthu- siastic feedback from educators and stu- dents alike, with both schools requesting the program’s return in 2026. • Colbert Packaging conducted TICCIT ac- tivities at both of its locations. In Elkhart, Indiana, they hosted a program on April 4, followed by a second event in Kenosha, Wisconsin, later in April. Across the two locations, approximately 150 students par- ticipated. • Curtis Packaging brought TICCIT to Haw- ley Elementary School, where 70 students participated in a meaningful Earth Day celebration. Together with educators, PPC staff planted over 100 saplings and inspired young minds with stories about renewable materials and the many exciting careers available in the packaging indus- try. In total, RRD engaged 271 stu- dents, pairing their packaging expertise with a focus on environmental impact. • Southern Champion Tray made a remarkable differ- ence by engaging more than 800 students across its Chattanooga and Mansfield locations. Their large-scale events showcased the power of TICCIT to bring com- munities together around sustainability. At W.H. NewCorr’s facilities produce a wide variety of materi- als, including E, B, and C flutes, along with double-wall op- tions, all made using high-quality liners and mediums. With over 99 percent uptime across its two corrugators, New- Corr helps Abbott-Action meet its material needs without the uncertainty faced by others in the industry. The ability to quickly access the specific types of cor- rugated material required is critical in industries where speed to market can be a significant competitive advan- tage. NewCorr’s operational efficiency is evident in its ap- proach to specialized materials like E-flute. Many manufac- turers, for instance, only run E-flute once a month, meaning that customers could face delays if an order doesn’t align with the production schedule. With its stake in NewCorr, Abbott-Action says it avoids this issue, bypassing common delays and ensuring that the materials needed are always available when required. Abbott-Action’s relationship with NewCorr also high- lights the advantages of strategic partnerships in the sup- ply chain. With NewCorr’s continuous investment in tech- nology and infrastructure, including recent expansions to increase production space and enhance delivery capabil- ities, Abbott-Action says it benefits from faster lead times and improved product quality.
