A note from the director

One of the invisible markers of the shift into adulthood is maybe when that question changes from ‘What do you want to be?’ to ‘What do you do?’. Being and doing. Our identity – the picture we present or that which others see of who we are – is somehow framed, if only whilst we do it, by the work that we do. Our work with Quarantine, across the past 27 years, has developed into a long and wide form of mass portraiture. Brief, consciously imperfect fragments of live pictures of others, stitched together to make something bigger, messier, clumsier and more grandly human. We try to create situations for encounters between strangers – where people who might not normally meet might productively spend some time together ...

This Perth iteration of 12 Last Songs is the eighth version – and the furthest away from our home town. Each city has its own specific kinds of jobs of course – you don’t get many shark spotters in Manchester – and there’s a fascinating glimpse of local culture that always emerges. Each location speaks in its own voice – a voice that can have all kinds of different dialects but perhaps shares a register. We’re looking forward to hearing Perth. However long you spend with us today – and do feel free to come and go or sit and stay as long as you like – I hope that you feel as welcome as we have in your city.
