MY HERO, MY ROCK, MY DAD

Great Dads Create Great Dads

By and large, becoming a dad has been my greatest accomplishment, favorite memory, and most important job. My six kids are my life — raising them has been one of the most challenging tasks in my life, but it’s also been rewarding and empowering. If you can raise your kids successfully, you can do almost anything. It’s often said that true happiness occurs when you realize that your children have grown up to be good people! I ALWAYS TRY TO PASS ON THE WISDOM OF MY FATHER DOWN TO MY KIDS AND MY HOPE IS THAT I WILL DO A GOOD ENOUGH JOB SO THEY WILL FEEL EMPOWERED TO DO THE SAME FOR MY FUTURE GRANDKIDS. Here’s the thing about kids: They truly do change your life. When I held each of my children for the very first time, that feeling of love, new responsibility, and the instinct to protect never grew old. Sure, it felt familiar each time, but with each child, there was no greater feeling than becoming a dad again. While it was scary, having such a great role model, my own dad, has made my job as a father much easier.

My dad, Bob Kendall, a retired police officer who served our hometown for 24 years, is my hero. He was the very first person to tell me that I could achieve

My dad gave me the courage to become a dad and the strength to be a great parent. While

saying that. I am so proud of all of my kids, as they are each so special and amazing in their own ways. I always try to pass on the wisdom of my father down to my kids, and my hope is that I will do a good enough job so they will feel empowered to do the same for my future grandkids.

My father truly is my best friend — I could not imagine my childhood or life without him. He made sure that I always felt confident, motivated, important, special, and loved. I would not be where I am today without him in my corner, and his unconditional, unwavering love and support. As a police officer, he was around people who were in some of the worst situations of their lives. He saw things that nobody should ever have to see, and many times,

Happy Father’s Day!

CUT THE FINANCIAL UMBILICAL CORD HOW TO RAISE FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE ADULTS

Adulting is all about doing your own laundry, cooking, and grocery shopping. It means making informed decisions about time management, organizational skills, and understanding how to be financially responsible.

But how do you teach your teenager financial responsibility? Let’s explore five important lessons your child needs to gain financial independence! HELP THEM FIND OPPORTUNITIES TO EARN MONEY. Before your teen can learn to properly manage their finances, they must first make their own money! If they don’t have a job, encourage them to begin the hunt. If your teen is still too young to hold a job, consider paying them for chores around the house or yardwork. Once your teen has a cash flow, you can then teach them how to separate it into spending money and cash to save. OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT. If your child doesn’t have a bank account yet, it’s time to set up a checking and savings account for them. It’s a great way to provide them with financial independence while they still have access to your

guidance. While credit cards can be scary to trust your learning teenager with, you should consider a prepaid credit card they can use to learn the ins and outs of how credit cards work while still having a safety net to protect their credit. INTRODUCE THEM TO THE CONCEPT OF INTEREST. Interest can be beneficial or a disastrous hindrance, so your teen needs to understand how it works. While it can be beneficial for certain savings accounts, it can wreak havoc on credit card debt. Demonstrate interest with different real-life scenarios to show your teen how they can grow their money or rack up tons of debt. Whether your teen has just started earning their own money or is preparing to handle finances on their own, these simple tips can help you start training a fiscally responsible adult.

Here’s to Saliva!

FUN FACTS ABOUT YOUR SPIT

IT REPAIRS YOUR TEETH. When acids from food try to break down the enamel on your teeth, your saliva, which is ph-neutral works to coat your teeth and replace the minerals that acid takes away. This process helps to prevent tooth damage and decay. IT HELPS SPEED UP THE HEALING PROCESS. If you’ve ever had a wound in your mouth, you’ve likely noticed that it usually heals quickly. You can thank saliva for this! The antibodies

Swallowing saliva is second nature — it’s something that we do between 500 and 700 times a day. In fact, did you know that while we are sleeping, we swallow about three times an hour? While we are awake, we typically swallow about once a minute, and if we are eating, we tend to swallow our saliva even more. But, have you ever given any thought to why we swallow or what saliva is even made of? Here are some fun facts to get you thinking a bit more about how saliva plays a major role in your oral health! IT’S MOSTLY WATER. Saliva is actually 99% water, and the remaining 1% is comprised of electrolytes, digestive juices and enzymes, mucus-forming proteins, cholesterol, other proteins, and uric acid. These compounds help break down food, defend our mouths and bodies against illnesses, fight off infections, and keep our mouths clean. IT HELPS YOU TASTE. While the taste buds on your tongue are largely responsible for helping you taste your food, saliva plays a role too! Saliva acts as a solvent to help dissolve food particles and distribute them around your tongue to your taste buds.

in your saliva act as a healing solution to help speed up the wound recovery process. Your saliva may not necessarily be appealing, but it certainly is beneficial to your overall health and well-being!

CHERRY CHIA GREEK YOGURT BOWLS

Inspired by HungryHobby.net

Your Child Lost Their First Tooth!

Need a quick, healthy snack? Check out this protein- packed yogurt bowl.

Chia Seed Jam • 2 cups Chelan fresh sweet cherries, pitted • 3 tbsp chia seeds INGREDIENTS

Greek Yogurt Bowl • 1 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 1 tsp hemp seeds • 1 tbsp granola

Now What?

• 2 tbsp honey • 1/4 cup water

When your child loses their first (or second, or third) tooth, it’s an exciting time — cue the tooth fairy! Most children will lose their 20 baby teeth in the same order that they first came in when they were babies. However, every child may react differently. Some may anxiously await a visit from the tooth fairy, others may be fearful of pain or discomfort, and some children may be indifferent. When your child starts losing some of their baby teeth and their permanent teeth are on the way, here’s what you should (and shouldn’t) do! NO WIGGLING. Your child’s tooth will fall out on its own when it’s ready. It’s important to encourage your child to not wiggle or yank on their loose tooth with their fingers. This will only cause unnecessary pain and discomfort. REMAIN CALM. As a parent, it can be a little nerve-wracking when your child loses their first tooth, but it’s important to keep in mind that staying calm helps your child do the same. If they begin to panic, they may worsen any bleeding, pain, or swelling. CLEAN AND BAG IT UP. Rinse your child’s tooth off with water and place it in a zip-close bag. This helps to secure the tooth until the tooth fairy shows up! CLEAN THE AREA. If your child is experiencing excessive bleeding where the tooth fell out, you can take a sterile gauze to pack the gums and apply gentle pressure until the bleeding slows down. After the bleeding has stopped, have your child swish with warm saltwater to sanitize the empty socket. BRUSH AND FLOSS NORMALLY. Ensure that your child continues to brush and floss normally. If the area where the tooth used to be is a bit sensitive for a few days, they can skip that area for the time being as long as they are careful to swish with saltwater to remove any loose food particles or bacteria.

DIRECTIONS

Chia Seed Jam We suggest making the chia seed jam in advance and storing it in the refrigerator so you can quickly assemble these yogurt bowls all week. Using a potato masher, mash down the cherries. Place a small pot on high heat and add the cherries, chia seeds, honey, and water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn down the heat and let simmer for 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Allow jam to cool before using or refrigerate. Greek Yogurt Bowls In a small serving bowl, mix the Greek yogurt with vanilla extract. Top the Greek yogurt with 2 tbsp cherry chia seed jam, hemp seeds, granola, and a few additional Chelan fresh sweet cherries, if desired.

THE INTERMITTENT FASTING PHENOMENON

Separating Hype From Health Benefits

There always seems to be a new dieting fad every couple of months, but one that has stayed around longer than expected is intermittent fasting. Many of us couldn’t imagine fasting for days on end, but intermittent fasting provides the benefits of fasting without asking us to wait days between meals. Intermittent fasting is a term used to describe eating patterns with differing amounts of fasting. There are three main types. The first and most common type is time- restricted eating, and it’s one of the easiest intermittent fasting diets to stick to daily. Time-restricted fasting has users decide on an eating window lasting between four and 12 hours. If it isn’t during your eating window, you’re actively fasting. The next is the 5:2 diet, which calls for two full days of fasting each week, with a regular eating schedule for the other five days. Finally, there’s alternate-day fasting, in which users alternate between fasting one day and eating normally the next. Regardless of which type of intermittent fasting you attempt, you’ll likely notice many benefits within the first few months. Studies have shown that it can improve your cholesterol levels and help you maintain proper blood sugar levels. Many studies have shown that those who practice intermittent fasting have no problem shedding weight and also keeping it off. Many users report losing 3%–7% of

their body weight within eight weeks of fasting. Studies even found intermittent fasting can lower the risk of breast cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and other serious conditions. Does this all sound too good to be true? That’s because it likely is. The Journal of the American Medical Association looked at 108 studies conducted on the alleged health benefits of intermittent fasting and found that only six were supported by solid evidence. That doesn’t mean the health benefits don’t exist; we just need more research before saying intermittent fasting is as beneficial for our health as its users claim it to be.
