ETCETERA
by BONNIE GUGGENHEIM TNT Advertising Director & Associate Editor TERRIFIC TOYS AND MORE
H ow many ways can you describe the AKC Cham- pionship Show sponsored by Royal Canin? Fabulous, exhausting, fun filled, wonderful, excit- ing and filled with surprises and zillions of people! With an entry of around 4,000 dogs, it was the place to see the top-winning Specials from in and out of the country, as well as exciting class dogs. Many of the Spe- cials-to-be were presented for a “first time look” by the fancy and there was certainly a lot of take in, with Toys being the focus many will be the Spe- cials to watch in 2017. I’m predicting an amazing year for many of you! A great many of the class dogs were produced by parents in the Specials ring showing that a pedigree of quality does come shining through with generation after generation consistently reaching Top Dog status. Everyone looks for the stars of the future, and there were a lot of people with checkbooks open looking to purchase stars, find a new addition to their breeding program or locate the perfect stud dog. I hope they all found just what they wanted. Lots of those winners can be seen in Top Notch Toys —the place where Toys are found, not lost. “I’M PREDICTING AN AMAZING
February will be the start of 34 years for Top Notch Toys! THANK YOU to those of you who have con- tributed articles, ads and supported our awesome Toy Group throughout the years. If you are new to Top Notch Toys … welcome and please contact me for anything that may help you with ads or pictures, etc. Toy competition is very tough and seems to become more each year. Speaks very well for our beloved Toy Group. Lots of success in New York! I hope to hear your good news and report it here in TNT because… inquiring minds want to know. Warm wishes, good health and lots of wins in 2017! Bonnie bonnie@dmcg.com 863.738.8848

Progressive and the Specialties in New York will be another opportunity to talk with those of you whom I missed. THE UNFAIR COST OF PET OWNERSHIP by BJ ANDREWS
WHICH DID YOU GET FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR, A NEW CAR OR A NEW PUPPY? B uying and maintaining an automobile is cheap com- pared to paying a fair price for a purebred dog and then getting hit with rip-off veterinary service fees. Why is there such a discrepancy? Sure there’s business insurance and advertising for a veterinary practice and there’s staff and equipment. But if you are a successful breeder, you may have kennel help. You spend a fortune either owner-handling or paying a profession- al handler which is often cheaper than travel expenses. You have a dog vehicle or motor home and all the grooming gadgets and you advertise too so it all pretty well equates to an x-ray machine and other standard office stuff. So here’s the rub. In 2016 pet owners will invest $2 billion on pet purchases and spend over $67 billion on food, supplies and veterinary care. The disparity is staggering. You will pay many times more to care for your pet than you paid for the pleasure of his company or the services he provides such as protection, emotional or physi- cal therapy and companionship. You love your car and depend on it to get you where you have to go. But whether you buy a top of the line auto- mobile or a late model used car, your ownership costs over a five-year period won’t come close to the purchase price (Kelly Blue Book). Why is that not a comparable fact when purchasing a purebred dog? In 2015, American pet owners spent $60.28 billion (APPA) and 2016 owner- ship costs will be higher. Breakdown: Food: $23.05 billion Supplies/Medicine: $14.28 billion Vet Care: $15.42 billion
Live animal purchases: $2.12 billion Grooming & boarding: $5.41 billion So let’s get real here. A car is a neces- sity for most families. What about your pet? Whether you are suburban or urban, a pet can be an emotional or physical necessity as in the case of handicapped owners. Rancher or res- taurant owner, a canine companion brings laughter, appreciation for nature, gets you outdoors and is a significant health benefit. There’s little doubt that a Porsche or Ferrari makes you feel good, power- ful and provides pride of ownership. A devoted dog does likewise and like your wheels, some breeds signify that you’ve arrived whether you own a country estate or a Manhattan high rise with built in grooming parlor and dog walking services. Okay, so let’s compare cost of own- ership. Online research and breeder interviews show that the cost of a well- bred, lovingly raised purebred will average $1,500. Some breeds, especially the giant breeds will be much higher. Beware of any cost lower than $700 because no one who cares about their breed’s temperament (personality), type (correct appearance) and overall
health can create a litter for less. If the breeder has provided genetic assur- ance, quality food, hygiene, loving attention and veterinary care, they will have that much invested at least that much in your puppy. It goes without saying but I will any- way; any caring breeder will want to know something about you, and unlike the car salesman, he or she will be there for you throughout the life of that dog and often long after. So now let’s compare upkeep. You take your car in for servicing in order to keep it running at top efficiency. It will be washed and polished and get fuel appropriate for its engine. You chose a mini-sport for good mileage and scooting around town. If you have a big family, you choose a bigger car or a van. If you appreciate a nod from a sports car or classic car enthusiast, you bow a little to your vanity and choose some- thing exotic. All of the above applies to buying a dog that you will have for at least twice as long as the automobile! So let’s compare upkeep. You can wash and polish your car or pay some- one to do it for you. You bathe and groom your dog or pay someone to do
“IN 2016 PET OWNERS WILL INVEST $2 BILLION ON PET PURCHASES AND SPEND OVER $67 BILLION ON FOOD, SUPPLIES AND VETERINARY CARE.”
64 • T op N otch T oys , J anuary 2017
it for you. Cost will be about the same. Either way, having someone do it means you won’t get wet. When the engine is making a funny noise, you take your car to a mechanic. Do you listen to your dog when he speaks silently to you of his discomfort? If he isn’t “running right” do you take him to the veterinarian? Either way you’ll pay but you’ll be given an estimate on service or repairs cost
on your car. You can comparison shop but… as a dog owner, it is unlikely that you’ll receive any estimate until after x-rays and/or lab work has been done. Is that why there’s such a discrep- ancy between the cost of owning a nice car and a purebred dog? Take a junker to the shop and they let you off easy. Used parts, quick fix to get you back on the road. Take a dog to the vet and it can be like going to Mayo Clinic where
everything is secret until you get the whopping big bill. You don’t hesitate to price shop and get a feel for customer service at your auto dealer. They expect it and thus very competitive. You buy a great puppy for 1% of what you paid for your hot wheels and then pay 10 times more to get him serviced for stuff you don’t understand? Did your loving heart rob your brain of common sense?

TOP NOTCH ADVERTISING SIMPLE RULES FOR EFFECTIVE ADS by SCOTT TONEY Midwood Japanese Chin
H aving spent almost 20 years as a commercial marketing executive for a major bank, I have come to understand the value of an effective marketing and advertising campaign. A comprehensive marketing campaign is a multi-pronged endeavor encompass- ing advertising, public relations, media relations and community involvement, to name but a few. For the purposes of this article let’s examine the role of print advertising, and how you can ramp up the impact of your ads in vari- ous publications. PRINT VS. ONLINE ADVERTISING It’s no secret in the internet age that online publications and adver- tising have replaced many of our beloved publications including news- papers, periodicals and breed maga- zines. Internet advertising can reach a broader audience for less money, but it’s important to remember that the impact of an online ad can be fleeting. For example, if an online ad has a click- able “call to action” like directing you to a 20% off coupon or a website where you can purchase goods or services, it is very effective, but also very tempo- rary. For the type of meaningful, last- ing impressions we are trying to make
as dog breeders and exhibitors, noth- ing replaces advertising in print. BENEFITS OF PRINT ADVERTISING There is no better way to target a specific or narrow audience than print advertising. As dog breeders/exhibi- tors, we are fortunate thawt we can send our message to as broad or narrow an audience as we like. For example, we can market in all-breed ( Showsight ), Toy ( Top Notch Toy s) or specific breed publications ( The Orient Express ) mak- ing our audience as broad or as narrow as we’d like. Print ads not only target your specif- ic audience but are sustainable (publica- tions are permanent records, and often valued reference guides), delivered to loyal readers and can be repeated as often as you’d like. Your message can evolve from month-to-month as the sto- ry, history and wins of your dog grows. SOME SIMPLE RULES TO FOLLOW • Develop a look and feel for your “brand” and stick to it. As stated, you can create sustained impact by advertising on a monthly basis. Don’t lose your kennel or your dog’s identity by having radically different looks each month. Work
with a graphics person or the ad contact of your favorite magazine to identify key elements that you will consistently use in your ads such as a font (clear and large enough to be easily read!), color palette, logo, and boilerplate language. For example, consistently using the same signa- ture information such as: a. owner/breeder/handler info b. Logo c. Tagline d. Contact info including email address, web or Facebook URLs, etc. • Make sure you deliver pertinent information. What is the dog’s name? Who is handling the dog? What judge is pictured in the photo? Where was the dog shown?

“IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO CREATE A ‘BRAND’ OR A LASTING MESSAGE OR IMPRESSION ABOUT YOUR DOG (OR ANY ‘PRODUCT’) PRINT ADS HAVE PROVEN TIME AND AGAIN TO BE THE BEST WAY TO DO THIS.”
What do you want your audience to know about this dog; i.e. that he’s #1 in the country, cleared for knees, hearts and eyes, youngest to ever win a national specialty, available at stud, etc? • Use high-quality, true-to-life photos. Make sure your photo is at least 300dpi and shows your dog at a flat- tering angle. Small technical flaws in the photograph can be photo- shopped, but never at the expense of altering the true look of your dog. You want your dog to wow fellow exhibitors and judges when seen in person and not be a big let-down from an artificially created illusion of them. • While it’s important to have a con- sistent look and feel for your ads as far as stylistic elements, remember to mix up the photos and layout from time to time. Stacked show photos can become boring. A beautiful candid shot can really let your peers and judges see the dog’s natural expression. If you want the dog and its handler to be recog-
nized as a team, be sure to include photos of the dog and handler together. Don’t always use the stan- dard layout of a headline at the top of the page, show picture in the middle, and boilerplate language at the bottom. Create visual interest by making the reader’s eye move across the page in different ways. Make them want to stop and study your ad. • Don’t over-do it! This is one of the most important pieces of advice I can share. It’s tempting to use too many photos, too much copy or over-the-top, hyperbolic words when describing your dogs. Remember the old saying “less is more.” Make your words count, and don’t inundate the reader with too many superlatives when describing your dog, their win or the competi- tion they defeated. There is a fine line between a humble “brag” and obnoxious boasting. Not every win was accomplished by “beating top specials” or under the country’s most esteemed judge. Choose your
words wisely or after a while they will become only so much back- ground noise. • Recognizing judges: Please respect the judge(s) by mentioning them by name (spelled correctly please!) and extending your thanks. Remember, the thank you is not because the judge “gave” you or your dog the win. The appreciation is for their hard work and dedication in honor of our sport and for their upholding and recognizing the breed standard. CREATING YOUR BRAND Print advertising creates a perma- nent record of your message that can be accessed over and over again by multiple people. If you are looking to create a “brand” or a lasting mes- sage or impression about your kennel, dog, or any “product,” print ads have proven time and again to be the best way to do this. Take your time to place clear and compelling ads on a regular basis and you will be surprised at the positive results.

CHEATING AT SOLITAIRE
by CAROLINE COILE
W hat would you give to own a top dog? It’s no secret it’s going to cost a lot of money for trav- el, entries, handling and advertising. Oh, and the dog! In return you get the excitement of a campaign, the admira- tion of others and the acknowledge- ment that you have the best dog in the land! But what if you bought those acco- lades? What if some of your expenses were in payments to judges? Would that be as fun? Such was the case with 1986/1987’s top dog, the Fox Terrier, Ch. Galsul Excellence, winner of 103 Best In Shows. “Paddy” was undoubtedly a stunning example of his breed, but co-owner William MacKay wasn’t satis- fied with the many BISs the dog could have won without any additional help. He apparently funneled millions of dollars of company funds for his own uses, even signing up AKC judges to the company payroll. An IRS investigation along with irate business associates brought these matters to AKC’s atten- tion and MacKay was banned from AKC for life. Paddy’s record was allowed to stand, but since all his dogs, even co-owned ones, were banned from AKC activities, Paddy’s offspring couldn’t be registered for five years while things were sorted out. MacKay’s was certainly not the first such instance. Some years before several prominent judges were barred for life from AKC affairs for accepting bribes in the form of swimming pools and new cars. Who says judging can’t be lucrative? And just a few years ago the show world was buzzing when a prominent handler was caught offering a judge $500 (or $5,000—the stories differ) for a BIS. The initial response of everyone I knew was not so much outrage at the offer, but at the fact that had they known it was so cheap, they would
have bought a BIS a long time ago! May- be a dozen! After all, either sum is far less than most of us shell out before we can even dream of bringing home the big rosette. But if it came down to it, would you really pay for it? We might initially say, “You bet!” but upon a moment’s reflection most of us would change our minds. Because if it’s just about buying a ribbon, you can get a really big one for about $20, with anything printed on it you want. True, you won’t get that win picture and your dog’s name in the show results, but here’s a news flash: Nobody but you cares. Basically, all this stuff you’re doing, all this running around, freaking out about the competition, spending money—nobody but you (and maybe your dog’s breeder) really cares wheth- er your dog wins or loses. So if you’re cheating for wins and records only you care about, how is that any different from cheating at solitaire? How is it a win if it’s bought and paid for? Or is winning at any cost, outsmart- ing the competition through any means, the ultimate challenge? As exhibitors, we’re all faced with this same dilemma, just usually on a much smaller scale. If we entered dog shows simply to get a judge’s opinion on our prospective breeding stock, we wouldn’t scour
premium lists for judges who “like us” or “like our type.” We’d either take them as they came or choose them solely on their knowledge and integrity. And we wouldn’t hire handlers based on their face recognition. When I was just a teen I had a Borzoi who was not a very good show dog; I talked to a handler about taking her and the han- dler agreed she wasn’t great but said she could finish her because several of the judges coming up were friends with her father, who was a judge. I didn’t want to finish her like that and I ended up showing her myself. She never won a single point, but I’m more proud of that today than had I given in and bought a title. What would the title mean if it was based on the handler and not the dog? We wouldn’t accept it when judges tell us we’re going to win before the show even starts, as one judge told a friend of mine on his birthday—that he’d be getting a nice present from him. And sure enough, he “gave him” the group. Many years ago I was show- ing a top ranked Saluki, but we were at the last day of a three-day weekend and had yet to get a group placement. I was bemoaning my lack of wins to a friend who said, fear not, he was very good friends with the group judge, he’d put in a good word. Sure enough,
