newsgrams by James O. Henry Chairman, H istor y D epartm en t, Biola College of automatic respect to elders is gone; the time of volunteering to serve one’s country as a patriot is gone; the time of balancing spiritual values against materialism is gone; the time of giv ing loyalty and a full measure of work to one’s employer is gone. High school pregnancies are hushed. Beer brawls are staged in parking lots. A boy who aspires to be a man needs a knife. Shoplifting is fun because it proves that you are smarter than your enemy. A girl who says ‘no’ the first time out is on the leper list. Ganging up on a policeman teaches the ‘fuzz’ a lesson. It is a time of in soluble problems. It is the age of the ‘baby sitter.’ It is the age of the fast $40 cars and no fenders — just dead enders; the era of the baby-faced gang; chiseling is respectable; we want more missiles and less taxes, bigger freezers and more steaks; it is time-payment time; a day of Black Muslims and the battle of the races. An immoral girl can shake a great government; a homosexual scientist can upset the balance of power; moth ers slaughter their young; lying is fashionable and mink is status; poor people are stupid and rich ones are bright.” Old Russian Sect to Resettle in U.S. About 250 men, women and chil dren who are the last descendants of an old Russian sect now living in Turkey have been cleared for resettle ment in the United States. The little band of Old Believers are members of a sect that split from the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th Cen tury in a dispute over religious rites. They will enter the United States under the aegis of the Tolstoy Foun dation, which has long maintained a center for White Russian émigrés in the community of Valley Cottage, New York. Members of the sect have not changed their ways through the decades. They do not smoke or drink and they still prefer the farm dress of 17th-century Russia. The men wear beards and the women and girls, even in mid-winter, wear fresh flowers in their headgear when they attend church. They do not believe in inter marriage, and they forbid marriage to non-Christians.

What an Atheist Believes Mrs. Madalyn Murray, of Balti more, Md., who brought the now famous Lord’s Prayer case to the Supreme Court on behalf of her son, William J. Murray I'll, gave news correspondents the following as the belief of an atheist: “ An atheist loves his fellow man instead of a God. An atheist believes that heaven is some thing for which we should work now, here, on earth, for men together to enjoy. An atheist believes that he can get no help through prayer, but that he must find in himself the inner conviction and strength to meet life, to grapple with it, to subdue it and to enjoy it. An atheist believes that only in a knowledge of himself and his fellows can l\e find the under standing that will help him to a life of fulfillment. He seeks to know him self and his fellowman rather than to know God. An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church. An atheist believes that a deed must be done instead of a prayer said. An atheist strives for involve ment in life and not escape into death. He wants disease conquered, poverty banished, war eliminated. He wants man to understand and love man; he wants an ethical way of life. He be lieves that we cannot rely on God, channel action into prayer, or hope for an end to troubles in the here after; that we are our brother’s keep er; we are the keeper of our own lives; that we are responsible persons; that the job is here, and the time is now.” Perhaps the most appropriate ob servation to the whole creed of the atheist is to quote Psa. 14:1: “ The fool has said in his heart: there is no God.” Rebellion Starts at Home, Demoralizes the Whole World A reporter for the Milwaukee Senti nel has made a penetrating analysis of our present condition. Summarized, it is as follows: “ Our children are jaded, disillusioned and listen to par ental opinion so that they may choose the opposite course. These youngsters will be running the United States'in another generation. Many of them cannot run themselves. . . . The time
