by Betty Bruechert A m o n g t h e b o o k s on cults which this column recommends are those written by the Chancellor of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, Dr. Louis T. Talbot, entitled, “What’s Wrong with Unity?” “What’s Wrong with Christian Science?” etc. Recently a friend wrote us the following in re gard to Dr. Talbot’s book, “What’s Wrong with Seventh-Day Adven tism?” ! “ I was born in Comptche, Men docino County, October 24, 1874,” declares Charlotte M. Hoak of South Pasadena, “ My mother was bom in Windsor, Maine, May 1839, and was only 5 years old when the Adventists staged the Coming of Christ which was predicted by William Miller, a movement which spread like wildfire from Windsor, Maine to Ohio. Wind sor, Maine was one of the strongholds of the Millerites. My mother was the daughter of a Methodist minister who had twelve sons and daughters, some of whom were led away from our Lord Jesus Christ. . . . My mother related the things in the same order as on p. 19 in Dr. Talbot’s book. The Christians around Windsor, Maine in espousing the fanatical, but deluded Miller, became fanatics too. They dis carded their possessions, gave up their property, neglected their business, al lowed their crops to rot in the fields, Tefused to sow new crops, and took their children out of school. As re lated in the next paragraph, the dis illusionment was profound. Some re turned to their churches, some com mitted suicide, others became agnos tics. Some friends of my mother’s never went into a church again. My mother joined the evangelical Con gregational church but her life was shortened by the terrible exposure. She died at only 43 years of age and waged war against Adventism all her life. You cannot tell me about this sect. I am native daughter, bom into a nest of Adventists who hailed from Windsor, Maine, the Stickneys of Lit tle River, Mendocino County. I can relate at length what they taught.” Those who for the sake of the truth engage in the business of exposing false systems of religion are often maligned by the cultists. It is there fore refreshing to receive vindication and approval once in a while!
