B Y A L T H E A S . M I L L E R P a u l K e n t is i n l o v e . It’s his first love. Signs? Son number four, child number six, walks around in a daze. Or, he says, “Mother, when she smiles, her whole face lights up. She wears her skirts a modest length, too.” Um-m, interesting observations from the family’s sixteen-year-old. Last week he walked into the house from school and announced: “ I’m gon na go get a haircut.” The shock of this almost-too-casual s ta tem e n t proved almost fatal to Mother. Up until that moment it had been a tussle to negotiate a trip to the barber shop. We even threatened to tie a blue ribbon in his hair! Well, wonders and falling in love never cease! Sharon is in the throes of limited physical activity because her right leg is in a cast from ankle to thigh. Her knee is twisted, almost mutilated, weakened by a sudden jar last sum mer and it is her first experience of this nature. So life on this family planet is replete with both heartening and har rowing firsts. The Christian’s walk through this “ vale of tears” is also a series of beginnings again. There’s the first witness to another of one’s faith in Jesus Christ. Then there is that first step back into an act of sin followed by confession to the Father, forgiveness and starting again. Or there comes that haunting doubt which is soon hurdled by a great act of faith in the God of the impossible. This is the FIRST of a new year. Maybe you have some “ beginning again” to do. This may entail your picking yourself up and getting away from even the slightest taint of sin. Remember to “ resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Feel ing sorry for yourself will never get you going again; you must resist him daily. “ God is never tired of our fresh beginnings” is not an outworn truth. Did you do some dangerous slipping during 1963, believer-friend? BEGIN AGAIN! He giveth more grace. May this be a fruitful year for the Lord in your life. Then you will truly have a HAPPY NEW YEAR.
