According to the latest Manufacturing PMI® Report from the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®), economic activity in the U.S. manufacturing sector expanded in May for the fifth straight month. The report was issued by Susan Spence, MBA, chair of the Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. “The Manufacturing PMI® registered 54 percent in May, up 1.3 percentage points from April and its highest reading since May 2022 (55.9 percent),” Spence reported. “The overall economy continued expanding for the 19th con- secutive month. (A Manufacturing PMI® above 47.5 per- cent over time generally indicates expansion in the overall economy.)” Spence noted that the New Orders Index expanded for the fifth consecutive month after four months of con- traction, reaching 56.8 percent, up 2.7 percentage points from April’s 54.1 percent. The Production Index increased to 54.3 percent from 53.4 percent in April, while the Pric- es Index remained in expansion territory at 82.1 percent, although down 2.5 percentage points from April’s 84.6 percent. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 52.2 percent, up 0.8 percentage point from April’s 51.4 percent. The Em- ployment Index improved to 48.6 percent, a gain of 2.2 percentage points compared to April’s reading of 46.4 percent. “The Supplier Deliveries Index indicated slower deliv- eries for the sixth consecutive month following one month in ‘faster’ territory,” Spence said. The index remained un- changed from April at 60.6 percent after increasing during each of the previous five months. (Supplier Deliveries is the only ISM® PMI® index that is inversed; a reading above 50 percent indicates slower deliveries, which is typically associated with improving economic conditions and stron- ger customer demand.) The Inventories Index registered 49.9 percent in May, up 0.9 percentage point from April’s 49 percent. The Cus- tomers’ Inventories Index rose to 42.7 percent from 39.1 percent in April. The New Export Orders Index returned to expansion territory with a reading of 50.6 percent, 2.7 percentage points higher than April’s 47.9 percent. The Imports Index also improved, rising to 53 percent from 50.3 percent in April. Spence said U.S. manufacturing activity remained in expansion territory during May and grew at a faster pace than the previous month. Of the five PMI® subindexes, New Orders and Production showed faster growth, Supplier Deliveries was unchanged, and both Employment and In- ventories remained in contraction but improved from April. She added that 25 percent of survey comments were positive and 69 percent were negative, representing a CONTINUED ON PAGE 40
