Three of the four demand indicators — New Orders, Backlog of Orders and New Export Orders — were in ex- pansion. The Customers’ Inventories Index remained in “too low” territory, although it contracted at a slower rate. A “too low” reading is generally viewed as supportive of future production activity. On the output side, the Production Index expanded for the seventh consecutive month. The Employment Index improved by 2.2 percentage points but remained in con- traction territory. Survey respondents were evenly split, with 50 percent reporting that managing headcount re- mains the norm and 50 percent indicating they are hiring. Spence also noted that input indicators — supplier de- liveries, inventories, prices and imports — generally im- proved month over month. Supplier Deliveries remained at its highest level since May 2022 (65.7 percent), while inventories contracted at a slower rate. The six largest manufacturing industries expanded in May, in the following order: Computer & Electronic Prod- ucts; Machinery; Transportation Equipment; Petroleum & Coal Products; Chemical Products; and Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products.
