About Us 11
SOME PLACES HOLD THEIR HISTORY LIGHTLY. THIS ONE WEARS IT WELL. Orange County tells an American story through its lasting spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship, and resilience. For nearly two centuries, people have come here for the water, the landscape, and the chance to slow down. This is a place that has earned the name timeless.
The first West Baden Springs Hotel opens, fashioned after the European mineral spa Baden-Baden.

SPRINGS, ROADS, & EARLY COMMUNITIES 1820s — 1870s
FIRST PEOPLES, FIRST PATHS, & EARLY SETTLEMENT Indigenous Era — 1810s
As routes improved, Orange County became more connected to the wider region. Roads, inns, and public buildings helped turn a rugged landscape into a place of settlement and exchange. Mineral springs continued to draw visitors as French Lick, West Baden, and nearby towns took shape. By the late nineteenth century, these developments laid the foundation for community life.
Long before French Lick, West Baden, Paoli, and Orleans, this region was defined by natural springs, travel routes, and the people who moved through it.
French Lick Fort is built as a ranger post. Free Black families settle with abolitionist Quakers led by Jonathan Lindley.

By the early twentieth century, Orange County was a leading Midwest resort destination. Expanding hotels and rising tourism shaped Orange County’s identity and provided steady work for local families.
In the late twentieth century and into the next, investment, restoration, and infrastructure improvements began reshaping Orange County once again. This period renewed confidence in the destination’s future. Restoration, improved access, and investment laid the groundwork for a new era of tourism and regional identity.
