NCH psychiatrist Damian McGovern, M.D., put the Mayo network to use right away to help a patient get proper treat- ment for a rare mental illness.
38 W W HAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DEVELOP MEDICAL expertise and get it to the people who need it most? That question began to be debated back in the late 1800s, in the then-frontier town of Rochester, Minn., as Dr. William W. Mayo and his two sons, Dr. William J. Mayo and Dr. Charles H. Mayo, consid- ered how they could bring top-notch med-
ical care to the greatest number of people. Their answer was to create Mayo Clinic, a uniquely integrated medical practice and research group that has become known for excellence and expertise. Nearly 150 years later, the Mayo phi- losophy is alive and well—and reaching Southwest Florida through NCH Health- care System, the first Mayo Clinic Care
Network member in the Sunshine State. The idea behind the network is to make it possible for patients to benefit from Mayo’s knowledge and expertise without necessarily having to travel to one of Mayo’s facilities. Amazingly, that idea bore fruit during NCH’s very first days as part of the network.
