The eConsults that helped Dr. McGov- ern’s patient are only one aspect of being part of the Care Network. NCH physicians will also have access to Ask- MayoExpert, an online tool that allows physicians to tap into Mayo’s knowledge in disease management, clinical care guidelines, treatment recommendations and reference materials. “Let’s say a physician has questions about a rare form of breast cancer,” Dr. Weiss offers by way of example, “and Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville has an expert on the topic. He can get general knowledge on the subject. They also have a healthcare business—consulting portion, so we’re going to use that to work on patient satisfaction.” Following Mayo’s lead “It was really gratifying to see how we came together on this,” Dr. McGovern says of his eConsult. “Having worked at Mayo, I know what they have there, and it was really wonderful to connect this fam- ily with that expertise. They were con- cerned about driving up to Jacksonville or Rochester and they were prepared to do that, but this way we were able to save them the huge cost and inconvenience. I know they were grateful.” Dr. Weiss, too, is gratified at how well the first eConsult worked. And he believes that clinical knowledge is only one of many things NCH can learn from Mayo Clinic. He points to the leadership course Mayo offers to both physicians and administrators and says he plans to bring that to NCH as well. When it comes to caring for patients, there is always room for learning and improve- ment, Dr. Weiss says. “Our ultimate goal—and the most important reason for this collaboration with Mayo—is to help Floridians live longer, happier, healthier lives through access to the highest-level knowledge and expertise,” he adds.
