readable and educational format. This winter’s array is another fine example. NCH was recognized as one of five hospitals in Florida and one of 215 in the nation that are “most wired.” This award recognizes how far we have come with information technology to create a better and safer experience for patients and caregivers. The clinically significant collaboration between Mayo Clinic and NCH also continues to add to the quality of life in Southwest Florida. Barrett’s esophagus, a condition of pre-cancerous tissue in the esophagus, affects one to two million adults yearly. But it can be treated to avoid most esophageal cancers. The key is controlling gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is relatively easy to do once a diagnosis is confirmed. A tiny baby with abnormalities around the heart was born recently at the Birth Place. A smart and alert neonatal ICU nurse identified the abnormality, engaged the neonatologist who is in-house 24/7, and ultimately transferred the baby to a pediatric open heart surgeon. The baby is now doing well. You find gluten-free labels on many packages. It’s becoming more common as celiac disease is more easily recognized by a blood test. (Once upon a time, you needed an intestinal biopsy.) Gluten is hard to avoid but manageable, once you are educated. We also look ahead to the future of medicine at a brain-computer interface being developed at Brown University. Personalized medicine is maturing so that bedside tests may be possible, and freezing small metastatic breast cancers can be palliative. In all, another award-winning issue full of good information. Enjoy and stay well.
