In 2025 COPPA was amended once again. The amendments included an expansion of the definition of “personal information,” added in new definitions for “mixed audience website or online service, ”and modifications for methods for obtaining parental consent, a requirement that operators implement a written children’s information security program, and a prohibition on the indefinite retention of children’s personal information. According to COPPA, personal information is defined as individually identifiable information about a child that is collected online, such as: • A full name; • A home address; • Online contact information; • A telephone number; • A social security number; • A persistent identifier that can be used to recognize a user over time and across different websites or online services; • A photo, video, or audio file, where such file contains a child’s image or voice; • Geolocation information sufficient to identify a street name and name of a city or town; or • Information concerning the child or the child’s parents that an operator collects online from the child and combines with an identifier described above. • Biometric identifies that can be used for the automated or semi- automated recognition of an individual, such as fingerprints, handprints, retina patterns, iris patterns, genetic data, including DNA sequences, voiceprints, gait patterns, facial templates, or face prints;
