Spring Dead Spot Control Spring dead spot (SDS) is an important disease on bermudagrass turf in areas that experience winter dormancy, especially in areas where freezing injury occurs. Here’s some advice: • Cultural control: North Carolina State has led the research in this area and have found practices to maximize root growth and minimize winterkill are effective (https://www.turffiles.ncsu.edu/diseases-in-turf/spring-dead-spot-in-turf/) o Limit fertilization rates to less than 1.0 lb N/1000 sq ft/application o Avoid nitrogen fertilization within 6 weeks of dormancy o Reduce thatch through vertical mowing, aerification, and topdressing o Calcium nitrate reduced Ophiosphaerella korrae , the most common SDS pathogen in the eastern US o Amonium sulfate suppressed O. herpotricha, the most common pathogen in Midwestern states o Fall potassium appears to have no effect on SDS • Fungicidal control o Timing for SDS prevention is based on university research and begins in fall when average soil temperature at a 2- inch depth taken at 10 am is 72ºF for five consecutive days o Bayer solutions: Mirage ® Stressgard ® has been a proven solution for SDS for many years Densicor ® is the latest DMI fungicide from Bayer, effective on most bermudagrass diseases, including SDS Greens and fairways: Densicor 0.196 fl oz PLUS Mirage 1 fl oz, applied at <72ºF soil temp and again 28 days later Added protection: Mirage SG and Densicor can also help combat take all root rot, which can be active during the same time as the spring dead spot pathogen. • Research update: o Clemson University showed in 2019-2020 that Densicor (0.196 oz/1,000 ft 2 ) provides excellent SDS control, when compared to other industry standards including Mirage Stressgard. All treatments were applied on October 23 rd and November 23 rd , 2019, in Florence, SC.
