Time to Initiate Mini Ring Programs

Mini ring ( Rhizoctonia zeae ), or Rhizoctonia leaf & sheath spot, is becoming increasingly prevalent on bermudagrass putting greens throughout the Southeast. Although symptoms tend to appear in late summer through fall, the pathogen can be active anytime temperatures are between 83ºF - 97ºF. However, as with all diseases, the mini ring pathogen can still be active outside of this optimum range. Symptoms of mini ring are most severe when plants are under stress, such as low mowing heights and/or low soil moisture. In addition, this disease is favored when ammoniacal nitrogen is applied and switching to urea can greatly reduce disease severity. Soil temperatures throughout the Southeast are expected to climb to the upper 70’s to low 80’s in the coming days. These temperatures can allow the mini ring pathogen to proliferate rapidly in the soil and thatch. Now is the time to begin your preventative management practices.

Chemical Control

• Systemic fungicides such as DMI ’s are critical in controlling mini ring. Two excellent solutions with proven efficacy on mini ring include: - Densicor ® applied at 0.196 fl oz/ft 2 - Mirage ® Stressgard ® applied at 1.0 fl oz/ft 2 • Broad activity - these fungicides also have excellent activity against take-all root rot and fairy ring, which can be active at the same time as mini ring. For best results, water applications in immediately with 0.1” .
