pretation; a n d , taken collectively, would, if thus understood, confuse all the laws of language and thus derange the first principles of truth. But how solemn is this conclusion. In dealing with the Holy Spirit, (and He strives to enter, or dwells in every heart) we have to do, not with an impersonal influence, however vast, but with a per sonal Being whose quick sensibilities can be grieved, whose vigilant love can be gratified, whose forbearance may be exhausted by those who resist Him, but whose sympathy with those who yield to His voice is more tender than that of the tenderest parent, brother, or friend. IS ALL MODESTY GONE? Even secular magazines are becom ing openly antagonistic to the modern dance. Take this quotation from the Pathfinder: “ It has come to be a common thing for a young man to meet a young lady in good society, invite her to dance, step immediately on the ballroom floor, clasp her in a tight embrace, place his cheek against hers and begin a se ries of gyrations, twistings, wiggling, wobbling and toddling to the moan ing, jerky strains of the orchestra, which a few years ago would have brought the blush of shame to a har dened sinner and would have caused the arrest of both if seen by a police man. The young lady, who would slap a man’s face if he attempted such fa miliarities with her in private, quietly submits on the dance floor, and often meets her partner more than half way. Until comparatively recently such ac tions were only witnessed as part of the orgies of the underworld where they had their origin.” piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiijiiiiiiita^ Have you SAFE-GUARDED your GIFTS § = to God inmaking your will? proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.” “ Howbeit, when he, the Spirit of truth is come, etc.: he shall glorify me, etc.” Apart from the actions ascribed to Him, the very phraseology here employ ed by our Lord, which is equivalent to “ That Spiritual Essence Himself (not itself),” strongly evidences the personal nature of the Holy Ghost. And in strict accordance with this St. Paul writes, “ Ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the earnest of our inheritance.” Surely from a calm and comprehen sive study of this testimony gathered from the Word of God, we must con clude that if these qualities, and actions, and capacities, and designations, do not prove personality, there are none, how ever explicit and exact, which can do so. Unitarians are wont to speak of the Spirit as an effusion or emanation separate from God, or as an influence or power exercised by God. Can you speak of the intelligence, or of the love, or of the will of an effusion? Can you speak of an emanation, or influence of aught Impersonal creating and quickening that which it creates; striving with the ob stinate and convicting them of their er ror; performing miracles; addressing others in express words; appointing of ficers; commanding and forbidding; re newing that which was lapsed; inter ceding, teaching, comforting, and guid ing into truth; diffusing love and filial tenderness in the heart; witnessing with those who witness; approving with those who approve, and inviting with those who invite; and revealing the blessedness of those unseen? Can you speak of a mere abstract power being vexed, grieved, blasphemed, lied against, tempted, insulted? Can you speak of an impersonal essence as Himself? If in some instances you might thus per sonify an influence, most of those ad duced, taken singly, resist such an inter
