Mark says, “ He ordained twelve that they should be with Him and that He might send them forth to preach and to have power to heal sick nesses and to cast out devils.” (Mark 3:14, 15). On another occasion He in structed seventy and sent them on a similar mission. The power to heal was not even permanently possessed a- mong the few whom Jesus commission ed. The natural inference is that this power was an unusual and temporary expedient. It was one of the signs demonstrating the authority of Jesus and the divine origin of the kingdom that was being newly established. There is only one other passage that Mrs. Eddy might appeal to, to show that the gift of healing was intended for all. This is Mark 16:15-18. The command is given— “ Preach the gospel,” and then the words, "These signs shall follow— they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.” These signs did follow, but this passage is of no service to Mrs. Eddy, for it introduces a method of healing to which Mrs. Eddy is posi tively opposed. The laying on of hands is forbidden in her teaching, and she tells us that where the expression oc curs in Scripture it is used “ metaphori cally, as expressing spiritual power.” To lay on hands is to recognize the reality of disease, and this would never do. At this point it is easy to show that Mrs. Eddy’s system of healing was not Christ’s system at all. Did Jesus act ually, literally lay on His hands in cases of healing? If so, He did not heal by Christian Science principles. Jesus and the disciples laid hands upon the sick, recognized the reality of disease and bade it depart instantly, which it did. Matthew records fourteen cases of heal ing by Jesus. Six were performed by the use of His hands, six by direct com mand, and two do not say as to the method used. Mark gives thirteen cases— six by the hands, six by com-
