(metal sculptor), Morgan Lavapo (Gulf painter and muralist), and Pax Jukapa (self-taught Goroka painter). They will be joined by Australia-based PNG writer/ actress Wendy Mocke, Jimmy K Thaiday (Torres Strait Islander ghost fishing net, painting, print/etching), Charlie Street (painting and graphics), and Bernadette Killin (visual artist and educator). The artists met in Port Moresby in March for a series of workshops and art camps involved in a second exhibition right here in the capital although finding an appropriate gallery to house the PNG event is the next challenge. The Port Moresby exhibition will bring artists from Far North Queensland, the Torres Strait and Gimuy (traditional Aboriginal lands of the Cairns region) to PNG to engage in to prepare for the Cairns exhibition, and will also be
workshops and seminars with PNG artists and students. Also ahead is a food-focused collaboration featuring Port Moresby-based celebrity chef Julz Henao and his catering company The Heathy Food Co. Chef Julz is no stranger to TV after starring in the PNG Chef cooking show in 2020 that travelled to all parts of PNG to promote local produce, then in September last year the Michelin star restaurant-trained chef also enjoyed a career highlight by being chosen as the late Pope Francis’ personal chef during his anniversary celebrations, Chef Julz will be cooking up a storm for an exclusive evening of fine dining, and also exploring Australian and PNG cuisine through the creation of a new TV docu-series. Helping Chef Julz deliver the culinary aspects of the three-day PNG visit. As part of this year’s
campaign will be Cairns-based actor, film producer, director and screenwriter Aaron Fa’aoso, whose heritage is from the Torres Strait Islands, Samoa and Tonga, and who starred in the award-winning 2012 TV mini- series The Straits . Another highlight of the events calendar is a film festival, competition and workshop in Goroka and Port Moresby from June 9-22 involving a team from the Pasifika Film Fest. Ahead of a deadline of May 31, filmmakers were invited to submit new or existing short films – drama, documentary, or historical – on the theme “Shared Stories, Stronger Ties” for the Yumi Stap Wantaim 72-Hour Film Competition and Film Festival. The festival will celebrate the powerful role of storytelling in building cultural connections between Australia and PNG.
