The International WELL Building Institute™ and the WELL Building Standard™

The International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI™) is a public benefit corporation whose mission is to improve human health and well-being in buildings and communities across the world through its WELL Building Standard™ (WELL). WELL is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of buildings and communities around the globe that impact the health and wellness of people. The WELL Building Standard focuses on seven categories of building performance: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind, and is grounded in evidence-based research that demonstrates the connection between the buildings where people spend approximately 90 percent of their time and those buildings' health and wellness impacts on those who use them. The WELL Building Standard can be aligned with green building rating systems such as LEED and the Living Building Challenge. WELL is administered by the International WELL Building Institute, and third-party certified by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI).

A professional in the cleaning industry can potentially help a WELL project with preconditions and optimizations related to implementation of a cleaning protocol which addresses the effective cleaning of low and high touch surfaces and improvements in indoor air quality associated with the proper selection of low VOC cleaning agents and high efficiency cleaning equipment, along with the deployment of entryway matting systems. In addition, a cleaning industry professional may also assist with hand washing solutions which contribute to occupant wellness, such as hand hygiene systems which include hand soap, paper towels and adequately designed faucets. And finally, assistance may be provided with

lighting design which further contributes to occupant comfort and wellness. For more information about IWBI and WELL, please visit www.wellcertified.com.

WAXIE offers green cleaning consultation and solutions which when implemented properly with an effective cleaning protocol can help con- tribute to improved indoor air quality and building occupant wellness. If you are interested in pursuing WELL Certification, your WAXIE Account Consultant can work with you to design and implement a customized green cleaning program which includes a cleaning plan with associated cleaning agents and cleaning equipment, entryway systems, hand hygiene solutions, and lighting design strategies which can potentially assist with your project.

BIOBASED

Biobased products are those which are derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine and forestry materials. The USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) BioPreferred ® Program recognizes biobased products in a variety of categories, including cleaning products. Biobased cleaning products help the country to reduce dependence on imported oil, are considered to be more helpful to the U.S. economy in general and the rural economy in particular, and are typically healthier for people and the environment than petroleum-based alternatives. The USDA has initiated a USDA Certified Biobased Product label to help identify and promote products which are made from biobased materials. The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (referred to as the 2002 Farm Bill), which was reauthorized and expanded by the Agricultural Act of 2014 (also referred to as the 2014

Farm Bill), requires federal agencies to purchase biobased products when reasonably available, reasonably priced, and comparable in performance. A professional in the cleaning industry can choose to utilize products with biobased ingredients in the categories of general-purpose cleaners, rest- room cleaners, carpet care, floor care, industrial cleaners and degreasers, hand soaps and hand sanitizers, and specialty cleaners (such as furniture cleaners, metal cleaners and graffiti removers) to help a facility reach its overall sustainability goals. For more information on biobased products and the USDA BioPreferred Program, please visit www.biopreferred.gov. WAXIE has several cleaning products which include biobased ingredients from which to choose, including general-purpose cleaners, industrial cleaners and degreasers, specialty cleaners, and hand soaps and hand sanitizers. Your WAXIE Account Consultant can work with you to design and implement a customized green cleaning program which includes biobased products.
