BIODEGRADABLE PRODUCTS INSTITUTE (BPI)
The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is a not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder organization founded in 1999 to promote the use and recovery of biodegradable materials via composting. BPI provides independent, third-party review that products meet accepted scientific standards for compostability: ASTM D6400 (for plastic products), and ASTM D6868 (for paper products, and paper laminated with plastic). BPI Certification allows consumers, composters, waste haulers, regulators and officials to more easily distinguish products which are designed to biodegrade quickly, completely and safely when composted in a well-run municipal or commercial compost facility. At the core of the BPI’s program is a trademarked “Compostable Logo.” The logo is licensed to approximately 200 manufacturers, distributors and re- sellers throughout the Americas, and appears on more than 4,400 compostable products ranging from paper towels, napkins and bags, to foodservice supplies like cups, plates, bowls, lids & cutlery. Many organizations recognize that used/wet napkins, wipes and paper towels accumulate in great quantities. Paper recycling efforts often refuse to accept this paper since it is wet and potentially unsanitary. Large-scale commercial composting offers a much better alternative than sending this used, wet paper to a landfill. BPI certified trash collection bags can also be used to collect this wet paper, offering a way to prevent leaks while ensur- ing that both the bag – and its contents – are safe for composting! A professional in the cleaning industry can choose to utilize BPI certification standards to specify and source products which are certified composta- ble. BPI certified green cleaning products in the categories of plastic liners, compostable napkins and foodservice ware can help a facility reach its overall sustainability goals. WATER CONSERVATION
Water consumption in a facility can be addressed through a variety of strategies, including a retrofit with water saving restroom accessories and the implementation of cleaning products and processes which use less water. Water consumption can be reduced in a facility by up to 10–30%, and health and hygiene can be improved by utilizing touch-free technology. ENERGY CONSERVATION
Energy consumption in a facility can be decreased through a variety of strategies, including a retrofit with energy sav- ing LED lamps and the implementation of a day cleaning program. Light energy consumption can be reduced in a facility by up to 50–70%, and ongoing replacement and disposal costs can be virtually eliminated by converting from fluorescent lamps to LED. Plus an energy savings of 10–20% can be realized by converting night-time cleaning operations to the day.
