ON Las Vegas BLVD
GEORGE FOREMAN VS. MICHAEL MOORER WAS ALREADY A GOOD STORY BEFORE THE FIRST BELL, BUT THE EVENT THAT UNFOLDED WAS TRULY ASTONISHING By Michael Rosenthal
G eorge Foreman’s impossible dream of regaining the heavyweight championship at 45 years old was slipping away. Michael Moorer, 19 years his junior and a future Hall of Famer, had made Big George look his age for nine-plus rounds on a historic fall night in 1994 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The talented southpaw champion fought behind a right jab that the old man couldn’t see, let alone avoid, to build a big lead. Foreman, it seemed to me at ringside, was on his way to a one-sided loss in his bid to become the oldest boxer to capture a world title. »
