The client’s height proved a dif- ferent kind of challenge. To prevent the dreaded shadows-at-the-sink issue, over-the-mirror sconces were replaced with Kohler Verdera lighted mirrored cabinets. But when it came to the shower, Gershoni recessed a showerhead into the ceiling. “Otherwise, he would hit his head,” Gershoni explains. Below that, for additional coverage, is an- other showerhead that comes out of the wall. Though the client loved the re- sults, he soon fell in love and went off in search of new space to start a family. So he was only been able to enjoy his supersized shower for a short time, but he’ll always appreci- ate the boost it gave to the apart- ment’s property value. But it makes one wonder: are we all bathing in showers designed for someone of a different height? Out on Long Island, designer Abigail Shachat of AJS Design was working on an even more mas- sive space. Her homeowners were taking advantage of some water issues to rearrange the problematic format of their bath and dressing room. ”Our big question was: how do you make these large, volumi- nous spaces work for the rituals of bathing and dressing, which are inherently intimate experienc- es,” she recalls. “I think it was this perspective combined with the owners’ more functional requests that played into the development of the design.” The first step was to swap the tub and the shower. This placed the shower in a large glass box with a stunning view—not to mention striking Hansgrohe fixtures—and addressed a previously awkward approach to the tub. Height was a factor here, as well. The shower had to be large enough to function for the husband, who is over six feet tall. But it also had to work for his wife, who is just over five feet
