WE AIM FOR PERFECTION When Serving Our Past, Current, and Future Patients

Growing up, I always knew I wanted to have a career where I could help others. I attribute this to my mother because she was a nurse. I constantly heard stories about how she was helping improve the health of others, and it inspired me. At first, I thought I would want to go into the medical field, but all that changed once I began talking to a family friend who was an orthodontist. He was running his own business, and having my own business was something that interested me as a child. I grew up on a farm, tending to animals, completing errands, and doing everything independently. This experience taught me to rely on myself. Working on the farm also taught me the basic principles of running a business.

& Implants. Drs. Bob and Ralph Honkola, two brothers, created A Lifetime of Smiles in 1973. Soon after joining the practice, I purchased A Lifetime of Smiles from them. I continued to manage the practice under the original name for 10 years. But then I realized it was time for a change and rebrand. In 2018, Bismarck Advanced Dental was established to better serve our past, current, and future patients. On top of being a family dentist where you can get annual cleanings, veneers, sealants, and more, we have a strong focus on dental implants and full-mouth comprehensive dentistry. We offer dental implants such as single-tooth, multi-tooth, and all-on-4 implants. Everything is done in our office — I will place your implants without referring you to another office. I do this so I can save you time and ensure that everything is completed to perfection. I love my work and look forward to interacting with my team and patients daily. I’m always looking to improve the office to serve our patients better. I view everyone who walks through our door as family. If you were my brother, mother, sister, or father, how would I want your experience at the office to be? This is the mindset I have for all of my patients, and I will do anything in my power to ensure that the care and quality you receive are nothing but the best.

I enjoyed the independence of working for myself and being self-sufficient. I wanted to find a profession where I could be in health care and run my own practice. Because of this and my exposure to a family friend, dentistry seemed interesting, and I decided to pursue this career path. So, I attended North Dakota State University for my undergraduate and then Creighton University for dental school.

practice under the original name for 10 years. But then I realized it was time for a change and rebrand.”

So, come on by Bismarck Advanced Dental & Implants! We would love the opportunity to serve you in any way possible.

Following dental school, I returned to Bismarck and began working at a dentist’s office called A Lifetime of Smiles. This office was located in the same location as the new state-of-the-art Bismarck Advanced Dental

IF YOU’RE MISSING SEVERAL TEETH

Try All-on-4 Dental Implants!

When you lose a tooth because of an injury or disease, you can experience complications such as bone loss, defective speech, changes in chewing patterns, or other discomforts. Replacing a lost tooth with a dental implant can help improve your quality of life and reduce the pain level you experience. If you have several missing teeth, you don’t need to have an implant for each tooth. Instead, try all-on-4 implants. Here is everything you need to know about this treatment. WHAT ARE ALL-ON-4 DENTAL IMPLANTS? This treatment is recommended when a patient is looking for a secure and permanent solution for many missing teeth that will prevent any additional bone loss. The all-on-4 implants look very realistic and function like traditional teeth. This implant includes four custom dental implants to hold the prosthetic teeth in place. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT? At first, you will come in for a consultation, and our dentists will go over your oral needs and take X-rays to determine your bone density. If you have

adequate bone density, we can start your procedure sooner. But if you need bone grafting, it could delay your treatment for a few weeks or months. After the surgery, we will schedule a follow-up to check on your implants and how your body is healing. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. Are these implants removable like dentures? No, all-on-4 implants are permanent and designed not to be removed. The implants are strong and function like natural teeth. 2. Are all-on-4 implants better than dentures? Yes! Some people find dentures uncomfortable because they can irritate your gums and feel unnatural. In addition, people with dentures often worry that they will come loose or fall out. But with all-on-4 dental implants, you don’t have to worry about that. These implants fit securely in your mouth with titanium posts. The posts help support your jaw health and reduce the look of “sunken in” cheeks.

3. Are all-on-4 implants as safe and secure as a single tooth implant? Dental implants are stronger than natural tooth roots. The dentist who CLEAN YOUR TEETH WHILE YOU CHEW

Maintain a Healthy Smile Naturally

It is commonly known that certain foods, like those with lots of sugar, are bad for your teeth. However, did you know there are certain foods that can actually clean your teeth? It sounds impossible, but it’s

Detergent foods can remove excess materials from the enamel of your teeth without adding any sugars or fats in their place. These types of foods are more beneficial unprocessed and natural.

true! These foods are called detergents. You may be thinking of the detergent that goes in your laundry, but that’s not the case here. Detergent foods are specific foods that clean your teeth naturally and keep your smile looking bright. WHAT ARE DETERGENT FOODS? Detergent foods are everyday edibles that have a crunchy or coarse texture. These foods act like bristles that scrub our teeth while we eat.

They are typically low in acidity and have properties that help eliminate oral sugars that cling to your teeth and bring down salvia’s overall pH level. The higher the pH level, the higher the acidity levels in your mouth where bacteria can thrive. WHEN SHOULD I EAT DETERGENT FOODS? Timing is very important when it comes to detergent foods. Dentists recommend brushing your teeth after every meal, but sometimes it’s just not possible or you don’t have access to a toothbrush. Detergent foods are perfect to eat right after you finish a meal or to incorporate into your midday snack. That way the detergent foods can rid your mouth of stuck-on food. Incorporating detergent foods into your diet is one of the easiest, most efficient ways to maintain a healthy smile. Their fibrous texture acts as a natural toothbrush, scrubbing away harmful materials from your teeth. But always remember, these foods aren’t a replacement for brushing and flossing. Research what foods fall into this category and give them a try!

Examples of these foods include, but are not limited to:

• • • • • • •

Carrots Apples

Plain popcorn (no salt, butter, or flavoring)

Celery

Pears

Lettuce

Cucumbers

To help prevent plaque buildup, tooth decay, and cavities, dentists recommend that everyone brush and floss their teeth daily. However, it’s impossible to brush and floss on every ridge and surface of your mouth. Because of this, decay may occur. But dentists have a safeguard to help fight tooth decay — dental sealants. WHAT ARE DENTAL SEALANTS AND HOW DO THEY WORK? Sealants are thin, plastic coatings that go on the chewing surfaces of your teeth. Most sealants are used on kids since they are more prone to cavities. But sealants are beneficial for patients of all ages. Your dentist will place the sealant over the grooved and pitted areas in premolars and molars. The American Dental Association stated that sealant could be placed over cavities in the early stages to stop the decaying process. HOW LONG DO DENTAL SEALANTS LAST? Sealants can protect your teeth from decay for up to 10 years. But your dentist will look at your sealants during your annual examinations to ensure they are still good or if they need replacing. WHEN SHOULD CHILDREN GET THEM? Children between the ages of 6–14 should receive dental sealants. Some dentists recommend sealants as soon as your child’s molars appear so they can protect them from decay. Although children mainly receive sealants, adults can get them if they’re at risk for cavities. WHAT ARE DENTAL SEALANTS? Should You or Your Child Get Them?

first created all-on-4 implants realized that because these implants are so strong, they only needed to place four titanium posts in the upper and lower jaw to keep them secure. Since the creation of all-on-4 implants, thousands of individuals in North Dakota have received the treatment — and loved it! WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DENTAL SEALANTS? There are several benefits of sealants:

• They’re long-lasting with proper care, meaning you can prevent cavities and tooth decay for long periods. • Molars have deep grooves and depressions on the surface, making them harder to clean. Sealants help reduce these grooves and prevent bacteria from developing in these areas. • The process is quick and painless and can save you money in the future. After the teeth are cleaned and dried, the sealant is applied to your teeth. Then, after the sealant hardens, you’re done. Sealants are more cost-effective than dental restorations and are typically covered in most dental insurance plans.

If you have any questions about dental sealants or want to book an appointment, allow your friends at Bismarck Advanced Dental & Implants to help you. We will be happy to assist you and help you and your family keep your smiles looking clean and healthy.

HEALTHY GUMS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES

REGULAR DENTAL CHECKUPS If you visit your dentist regularly, they’ll detect any early signs of gum disease and treat it before it becomes more serious. Professional cleanings are the only way to remove tartar and get rid of any plaque you may have missed when brushing or flossing. GOOD-QUALITY TOOTHPASTE AND RINSE Your gums are only as good as the products you use to care for them! Many toothpaste brands claim to reduce gum disease or whiten teeth, but it’s hard to know how to judge the better products with so many options. A good place to start is to find toothpaste brands that contain fluoride and have the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. Therapeutic mouthwashes can help reduce the speed at which tartar develops from plaque. Even though it’s not a substitute for brushing or flossing, a good rinse helps remove food particles and debris from your mouth. Make sure to look for the ADA seal, which ensures the product is safe and effective. Everyone wants to have pearly white teeth, but you cannot overlook your gum health care. So, use these tips to keep your gums healthy, and your smile will thank you later. Brush Up on Your Gum Care

September is National Gum Care Month! Did you know 47.2% of the population suffers from some degree of gum disease? Not only do your gums protect your teeth, but the health of your gums can also impact other health conditions. So, it’s time to brush up on the habits that keep your gums healthy and clean! DENTAL FLOSS As most people know, flossing helps remove plaque and food beyond your toothbrush’s reach and reduces the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease. Dentists recommend flossing at least once a day, but make sure you’re not using too much pressure. Simply pass the floss gently down your teeth, rubbing each side of the tooth all the way to your gums to ensure you pick up excess plaque, stray bacteria, and leftover food particles.
