People who live in our community are generally aware of the many high-profile art exhibitions that happen at Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center. The Salvador Dalí exhibit that opened at the MACC in August, for instance, was quite a hit. So, too, were the shows in our new Papillon Gallery, which support the work of local artists. But people sometimes seem less familiar with our community service. The MACC’s mission is to educate, elevate and encourage our community through the transformative power of the arts. We carry out that mission through our arts education, outreach and healing arts programs. The MACC broke a record with its art classes in 2024, with enrollment in our youth, adult, homeschool and other visual art classes topping 1,000 students for the first time in our history. We were especially excited about a new Summer Art Teen Immersive Camp that we opened with our partners at Nōssi College of Art in Nashville. Our arts outreach teachers were no less successful in bringing art to under- resourced children and families throughout Middle Tennessee. In 2024, they joined forces with 10 community partners and others to serve 11,074 participants at no cost to these groups or individuals. Similarly, our healing arts facilitators worked with 10 community partners to bring hope and healing to 3,612 participants suffering from trauma. All told, our education, outreach and healing arts programming reached 15,893 participants in 2024. Now that’s quite a record! We’re happy to report, by the way, that these good works have not gone unnoticed. In 2024, the MACC received a major Creative Forces Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support our Between the Lines healing arts program for military veterans. BTL was a top priority in 2024. During the year, the MACC created a new healing arts space at American Legion Post 17 Veterans Residence in Gallatin, purchased a trailer for our new BTL mobile classroom, and added a third class at the Veterans Recovery Center in Murfreesboro. We should note that the MACC received a second NEA grant to support our Home, Heart, Heritage Black history quilt project. These five amazing quilts will begin a national tour next year. Of course, none of the accomplishments listed above would have been possible without the generous support and tireless work of our board, staff, volunteers, sponsors, donors and friends. We are grateful and want to thank all of you for making this creative journey possible.

Our Mission & Vision

The mission of the Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center is to educate, elevate and encourage our community through the transformative power of the arts. The vision of the Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center is to be a creative town square that inspires everyone to indulge their imaginations and be their best.

The Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) is Sumner County’s premier arts organization. A nonprofit launched in 2017 and located in Hendersonville, Tenn., the MACC offers art classes and stages world-class art exhibitions in our headquarters at Monthaven Mansion, a spectacular home built in the 1850s. Once serving as a field hospital during the Civil War, Monthaven’s galleries and halls now exist to create vibrant arts and cultural experiences for people of all ages.

EXHIBITIONS An American Resurrection Bernie Taupin is best known as Elton John’s lyricist. But he is also a gifted visual artist, and in An American Resurrection he showcased 25 of his multi-layered creations, fashioned from manipulated flags, scorched paper, wax, wire, wood, corrugated cardboard, fabric, bubble wrap and resin. Portraits of Hope This major group exhibition featured 65 portraits of women and staff from the Lovelady Center in Birmingham, Alabama. The annual exhibit also featured the paintings of Tennessee artist and military veteran Gerald Morgan along with art created by participants in the MACC’s Between The Lines (BTL) healing arts program.

Stairway to Heaven Salvador Dalí was one of the most captivating and challenging artists of the 20th century. Dali found inspiration for these work in the Italian Medieval poet Dante Alighieri’s epic poem The Divine Comedy. River is the Road The 40 original works in this exhibit explored the unique ways the legendary Louisiana artist George Rodrigue used the river as a reference to his Cajun heritage and, ultimately, as a metaphor for the journey of life. The paintings, pastels and sculptures in this exhibit included landscapes and works from Rodrigue’s Cajun and Blue Dog series. I find Monthaven an inspiring place. As an artist, Monthaven has offered me an opportunity to try new mediums and learn about the business of art. They have musical performances, conversations about art and beautiful exhibits which include both local artists and internationally known artists. We are fortunate to have them in our area. – Saundra

Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center opened a new retail art gallery in spring 2024 called Papillon. The gallery occupies approximately 500-square-feet of newly renovated space inside Monthaven Museum. 2024 TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Priscilla Eichler was named the MACC’s first-ever Teacher of the Year. A veteran educator who holds three degrees from Vanderbilt University, Eichler is without question the MACC’s most experienced, dedicated and enthusiastic teacher. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that her students range in age from 5 to 90! She is involved in every aspect of our arts education programming. She teaches acrylic painting to seniors, and mixed media to children in the MACC’s Arts After School program. During the summer, she teaches a popular ARTopia class. Appropriately enough, Eichler’s Teacher of the Year Award trophy was created in the form of a butterfly. This beautiful award was handmade by Nashville-based metal sculptor (and MACC healing arts facilitator) Valentine Adams. The award now resides in an honored space on Eichler’s home mantel, resting comfortably next to the family’s Beethoven action figure. 21

skills, and community building. COMMUNITY par tners

Typically, the youth we work with don't have people who care for them or allow them to express themselves. When the staff from Monthaven come in, they make the youth feel heard and seen and loved. If it wasn't for Monthaven, our youth would have not found and developed skills that they are good at with their artistic abilities. – Bledsoe Youth Academy

BLEDSOE ACADEMY

One of the benefits of healing arts we’ve witnessed is its ability to facilitate non-verbal expression. Our women who’ve experienced trauma or struggle with substance use often find it difficult to articulate their feelings and experience through words alone. Healing arts offers them a safe space to express emotions and experiences that might be too overwhelming to verbalize. – Abby Newhall and Taylor Mora, Doors of Hope

It was a busy year for the MACC’s FREE Between the Lines (BTL) healing arts program for military veterans. BTL empowers veterans in Middle Tennessee who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), major depressive disorder and isolation. In 2024, we created our first healing arts space at American Legion Post 17 Veterans Residence in Gallatin. The MACC also purchased a trailer for our new BTL mobile classroom and added a third class at the Veterans Recovery Center in

Murfreesboro. The National Endowment for the Arts recognized the MACC’s Between the Lines program with a Creative Forces Grant.

This group asks us to do interesting projects to extract our inner thoughts and try ways we've never painted...they bring out of me emotions I didn't know I had. The creativity just flows from inside me.–Mike, BTL Participant, Veterans Recovery Center

I want people to see and hopefully take in how veterans feel dealing with 'the good, the bad, the ugly'. Art gives others a glimpse into our minds. For me, I can find enjoyment in the process and permission to let go and not be judged. –Michael, BTL Participant, Veterans Recovery Center

Every year, the MACC presents an annual Veteran Arts Exhibition and Fundraiser. For our Sixth Annual event in October 2024, we presented an exhibition from the Quilts of Valor Foundation. These large quilts are awarded to service members or veterans who have been touched by war. In addition, the exhibition included the paintings of Tennessee artist and military veteran Gerald Morgan along with art created by participants in the MACC’s Between The Lines (BTL) healing arts program.

2024 ANNUAL VETERANS ART EXHIBITION American Legion Post 17 in Gallatin celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2024. To mark the occasion, Post 17 erected a sculpture of a combat infantryman outside its Sumner County Veterans Residence on South Water Street. Titled “Blaze of Glory,” the statue was created by MACC healing arts facilitator and reclaimed metal sculptor Val Adams.

STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES FOR YEARS ENDED JUNE 30, 2024 + 2023

2024-2029 Capital Campaign

Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center has grown exponentially since its founding in 2017. Our school opened with just 30 students, who learned art in one of Monthaven’s four upstairs classrooms. Fast forward to 2024, and the situation at Monthaven couldn’t be more different. More than 1,000 youth and adult students were enrolled in the MACC’s art classes last year, an incredible 3,000 percent increase from our humble academic beginnings! What hasn’t changed is the number of our classrooms, which now must accommodate a vastly larger student body. Though the MACC has accomplished much in this limited space, we’ve been unable to meet the increased demand for pottery, music and many other specialized courses. Aware of these limitations, the MACC worked with a consultant in 2023 to explore options to increase capacity. The MACC engaged in months of due diligence, investigating the feasibility and sustainability of multiple options. In the end, MACC leadership decided the best course of action was to expand the Monthaven campus to include a new, 20,000-square-foot art center. In 2024, the MACC launched the quiet phase of a five-year, $10 million capital campaign titled “A Time to Build.” By the end of the first year, the MACC raised an impressive 20 percent of its goal. Great work is underway as we move towards launching the public phase of the campaign. We expect significant support from our many loyal donors and benefactors to help us over the finish line. A Capital Campaign to Increase Capacity for Sumner County’s Premier Arts Organization
